Blackmagic Design Announces New URSA Mini Pro G2 Camera

Keep in mind cDNG is now officially done and has been replaced by BRAW, so it's worth to consult Netflix as their online documents take forever to be updated.

(You also really, really want to make sure your post team is ready to handle 4 cameras and their RAW...99% of the time ProRes XQ or 444 is more than enough - it's amazing.)

As soon as I get off this flight I’m going to consult with our team about capturing ProRes.

On another note, this Production Company insists on using IR filters on their UMPs, but I haven’t read of that being standard practice, & hope to avoid it. Any thoughts?

It's mostly only a concern for those people who are planning on using heavy ND outdoors.

There are actually a lot of posts about IR filters and BM cameras...I would search BMCuser or the official forum, and/or start a new thread if you have any specific questions.

You could search YouTube too. A couple of random videos:

The bottom-line is you'll see the color shift if you want to filter heavy and/or shoot open without them (but this would be pretty normal for most cameras; some more than others depending on the strength of their internal filtration).

Quick question. What sort of "autofocus" does the URSA mini pro G2 support with the default EF lens mount. Groked the spec sheet and can't determine for myself. Thanks.

You’ll see IR contamination as soon as you go past a couple of stops of ND.

The internal NDs have some degree of IR filtration, but my SOP is to use NDs in front (I prefer this to internal even on Alexa) and use decent IR NDs. Firecrest, Nisi seem to get good reviews. I’ve used Moroni TRUE NDs and lately LEE NDs (aka Panavision NDs)

My not-really-informed guess is: new sensor, just like the old one but with some tweaks that allow it to work at twice the MHz. I think the technical term would be "a metal re-spin".

(I base my guess on the fact that the rolling shutter is twice as fast and the frame rates are doubled, but everything else spec-wise is exactly as it was)

Yep. A new spin and a few other tweaks. Think CFA.

For me because I do a lot of hand held with these cameras the faster integration time means the RS is far far less pronounced. It’s worth it even at 24 FPS :-)

Thanks John!

The Production Company’s Technical Director (not Netflix’s) mandates IR filtration even when not using ND, & no matter the source of illumination. Is that best practice?

Finished filming the project & post has begun. Used four UMP & at the last minute tossed a FS7 into the mix. One of the UMP’s PL mounts couldn’t be shimmed to the correct backfocus, but we used it anyways.

Need to find a better mLUT as the default looked garish, especially next to the custom mLUT being output by the FS7, which caused a bit of concern in Video Village, but I’m confident the Colorist will polish the footage to it’s best.

About the IR contamination, it was my F55 and I wish I could say I was proactive, planning ahead and this was a preventative insurance policy but IR wrecked some footage that became unusable in a way you would not expect. Was shooting for HDR delivery, WCG and high color volume. The problem did not show on the SDR copy made from the HDR grade, but in the expanded gamut of bt2020 and HDR it did. It was a bright daylight scene shot in the snow. At certain angles to the light, areas of pink would infiltrate the surface of the snow and skin as the camera panned. Learned the hard way, that IR contamination is not confined to dark areas.

In the Formatt Hot Mirror, the metallic alloy film is sandwiched between pieces of ground glass. It doesn't get scratched. I'm happy with it but thanks.

I feel like there is still some confusion as to whether this is a "new" sensor. The BM rep seems to sidestep the question.

It’s a new iteration or “spin” of the same sensor.

This new version is clocked much faster. That means that the frame rates go up but the biggest change I see is that the rolling shutter is also much reduced. The integration time is getting very close to Alexa now.

They have also tweaked their CFA a bit more as well.

So it’s a refined and improved version of the same sensor. Like the name says...”Generation 2”

What matters and what I see is much less RS issues (the higher frame rates don’t excite me that much) and more discrete colour separation / reproduction.
