Totally Usable
In the last twenty years, I've cut on Avid, on Final Cut Pro, on Premiere, and on Final Cut X. But one of the most exciting things I saw at NAB was the latest version of Resolve. Blackmagic has been adding NLE features to the last several versions, but this, to me, is finally the one that FEELS like an NLE should.
There are over 200 new features and a boatload of tweaks and improvements, but what impressed me the most was how easy the end to end workflow seemed. From getting footage into the media pool, creating smart bins, the new trim tools, the usual color correction awesomeness, and to export, there didn't seem to be anything missing that most editors would need. The new deliver tab also adds the ability to send to other apps, including an automated "send to ProTools" feature that creates all the files an audio engineer needs for mixing work, including a reference movie.
I think we're finally seeing the "endgame" Blackmagic had in mind when they purchased Davinci: bring people into the ecosystem with the most powerful color-correction package out there, then keep them in the app by making it a full-fledged NLE.
Oh, and it's still free.
