Other: BlackMagic Cinema camera!!!! 2.5k for 3k...

I think you would find, that the majority of us, who plonked down our money on the D16 are more than happy. They are both going to be excellent cameras. However, the Blackmagic camera has some bells and whistles that fall outside the remit of the digital bolex project, and similarly the black magic camera is lacking some very important features that are included on the Digital Bolex camera.

The Blackmagic will have the option of pre-debayered, pre-compressed recording for those who want to use them. When I put down my money on the D16, I did so knowing the camera would not ship with those kinds of features. I did so because I don't need or want those kind of features.

If I need to shoot a fast turn around project without Raw, I have an HDSLR which is perfect for that (T2i).

And, if a person does want to do fast turn around stuff with the D16, there is an HD-SLR additional module which will be released at a later date, that will provide exactly those functions.

What I need is a 2K Raw Digital Cinema camera. The D16 is exactly that, and isn't trying to be anything more than that. And, the fact that it has a sensor which is actually super16 sized, is exactly what I've been waiting for. The Blackmagic camera does not have a super16 sized sensor. The D16 has modular, replaceable lens mounts, which accept all the super16 cinematic glass out there. That glass will fully cover the D16 sensor... The blackmagic cannot use those amazing cinematic lenses, and does not (as yet) have replaceable lens mounts. The form factor of the D16 is also far preferable to that of the Blackmagic Camera.

So, whilst you might imagine that Digital Bolex backers are kicking themselves... You'd be wrong.

The blackmagic camera is a beautiful thing, and I may well get one at some point (if only for the fact that you'd be mad not to, given it comes with Resolve), it doesn't quite meet my needs as a Cinematic camera (odd sensor size and lens restrictions and form factor). The D16, however, does.

Dam this is moving too fast, I Second Paul with this and also being a Bolex D16 backer that is the camera I wanted and not the BMD Camera as much as I ALSO think it looks great considering what we're had to put up with so far.

It would be wise if SOME of you calmed down a bit and stopped bashing another camera that as of yet is also not available just like the BMD.

These are exciting time for both cameras and yes I also think the software bundle is a lovely bonus but i'm not gutted, or wish I could have my money back etc etc just have different needs for the ergonomics (remember the post I created recently) and my vintage glass love.

Last word, can people please stop referring to the BMD Camera as 'Super 16' as the D16 Bolex is the camera that has a sensor size and was pitched as a 'Digital Super 16 camera' being compatible with Super 16 glass, the BMD camera is not as lovely as it is.

Quick question! It's quite clear that the camera supports EF lenses, but what about ef-s lenses? Will they be compatible at all?

Don't know why you'd make a camera with a drive specifically for Macs though.

My guess is it's something to do with the efficiency of the file allocation, but that's just a wild stab. It would seem that NTFS would have been a better choice since Macs can read NTFS without any additional software. But I'm sure there's a good reason for it.

One thing, which BM could do better is to use Cineform technology as a recording format (after I said that their recording options are great :)). This would be total killer- from 12bit RAW, through many 12/10bit quality modes, up to proxy. This would make recording times at least 3x longer, solve storage speed issues and also solve grading/editing problems as CF is supported basically everywhere now.
Maybe in next 4K camera :)

I'm glad it's Mac Formatted. The only real cross compatible format would be FAT32 and that has a 4gb file limit.

Even with the great FCP exodus of 2011 a majority of editors still use Macintosh.

Cool. It's 50 bucks for MacDrive standard. Not awful, but a discount would be great. Don't know why you'd make a camera with a drive specifically for Macs though. I'm pretty sure a lot of PC users are going to buy this camera, and even the software comes in a Mac and PC version so this doesn't really make sense unless it's about a license issue or something.

Does anyone know how the sensor size stacks up to the Canon 7D? I looked at some sensor charts and it shows the black magic sensor compared to Super 16mm and Micro 4/3, but what does that mean compared to a 7D?

LIke if I take the lens off of a 7d and put it on the Black Magic, what's the difference in field of view?

The Canon APS-C covers the size of the T2i/T3i, 60D and 7d. I'll be keeping my T2i for extremely low light scenarios...

From smallest to largest, equal Angle of View at the same distance

Magic Cam - 11mm
GH2 - 13(ish)mm
APS-C - 16mm
Full Frame MKII (recorded 16x9 area) - 24mm

At the same distance, each of these will have similar angle of view,

Working on another thread.

What I think would be cool would be the ability to record to CinemaDNG and some kind of proxy format simultaneously... :)

Resolve 9 has a great batch render mode that can do multiple formats with one click. Great for doing a quick one light.
