Blackmagic Announces Two New Cameras! Texas Media Systems

This the camera you're excited about?

Pre-ordered before it was up for pre-order =P Non-refundable at that.

The reality is that it isn't the camera I'm excited about, it's the potential that a single camera body like this holds.

I don't think it's painfully obvious now, but when a sensor block is released and it costs next to nothing to buy, install yourself, and shoot immediately... that's when it'll become apparent.

Thanks! Makes sense, I'd only seen the photos from the one side!

Interesting.

To be fair, I didn't know either... I thought they were limited to menus/scopes, but knowing that there's a built in video tap for someone hovering around camera, that's great.

Hopefully the processor can handle the new sensors though

When's there's a 14+ stop sensor with an OLPF and global shutter then I might get excited.

=P I'm sure it'd be out of the price range of an A7S or 5D3 anyway. WELCOME BACK SQUIG

Oh, and 4K camera + Aliasing = not really any sort of issue. Darren's got a test floating around. OLPF isn't a major deal, could help, no big deal.

;P It's not about the price, I'd pay $6000 or more for those specs.

7-8K to start, plus media, batteries etc. It's well out of that range =P But I'm just ribbing ya for old times sake.

(for old times sake) If you can't shoot a feature with a $2000 camera you don't know what you're doing.

Man that 5D MK2 looks like crap, we've come a long way in 5 years.

Just glad that I have the option not to. Other than trying to clarify some details, I really don't care what anyone else uses. Being mostly satisfied with the format you shoot is a rare thing, BMD cameras have been that for me outside of some small issues with each camera (Image related).

I think this one will finally nail it with the first sensor update. So, that's why I'm here!

Likely going to get an A7S though... that lowlight and DR, Full Frame option...

That's the sensor the BMD needs.

Great test indeed. I didn't expect the BM4K to be cleaner than a C100, but there you go. Awesome.

And no, I don't think there's anything wrong with the 5D2 clip: that' how soft and dirty it is. We've come a long way indeed!

I saw someone post in the Canon sub forum about moire/aliasing on the 4K camera.. in comparison to the C100... it's just become kind of sad now. Although I can't say I'm not guilty of jumping the gun, but here's a pretty illustrative example from a C100 owner that no... moire is not worse on the 4K camera.

Having been shooting with it since last November, I've never been bitten by moire, and have only managed to spot it once, then it disappeared when I checked the clip again so I think it was a scaling issue when rendering out of R10. Go figure.

Kholi,

Are you referring to firmware update or the first hardware/sensor update in the ursa?

Nah, the firmware updates for the original cameras should add RAW and better debayering, lens support, and maybe some very minor operating fixes. The head of dev said that the firmware was already testing, should be within a few weeks of release.

I think after that, there'll be another firmware update that addresses some things that they can actually fix, what aren't hardware limitations.

What I was referring to was the fact that at any moment, BMD could grab any compatible off-the-shelf sensor, develop firmware for it, package it, and release it at a cost less than buying a new DSLR, and you'd have a new image in seconds. Right now my vote is for the 2.5K sensor in the original camera, with High Frame Rates activated, and an active MFT mount so that it can go to any other mount immediately. Take note of the price between the EF camera and PL camera URSA... you can extrapolate how much the cost of the actual sensor block might be when estimating how much a water-cooled camera body might be.

It'll make sense soon enough... say when CMOSIS develops a sensor capable of 14+ Stops @ 4K and HFR, and it's just a few months later it's being bolted into your camera, without having to send anything in.

I think that's what they're going for, and it's kind of the original RED mantra.

BMD's quite a ... strange company... I completely get the turn-offs and apprehension, but they are also a pretty deliberate company even if their intentions don't line up with their own customers. It won't be for everyone, it's just really great to have options.

Much more likely to me in the short term: when fairchild develops a 4K S35 version of the scmos2, with 15 stops of DR and HFR (an SCI4020 with 1.35x crop factor, instead of the square SCI2020 they recently unveiled) (one two three)
