i have never bothered to look into pre blacking tapes, but some editors I know say I should...
(i shoot dvx100a and edit FCP4)

it has always worked to just shoot and let the camera make the time code as it goes - any thoughts on importants of pre blacking and how to do it?

Blacking is not needed with modern tapes. All of the important reasons for blacking (repacking, establishing time code, allowing for use in a field deck only capable of insert editing) are things of the past. In fact, with smaller tape formats and small heads, the less you use them, the better.

You'll find most of us agree with Slappy. Do not stripe your tapes... but then again, don't turn off your camera while it is recording. Use the red button and THEN turn off. You'll be fine.

Also, I remember once using a tape a guy striped at home. I didn't record all the way to the end, and when I captured it there was some audio I don't think he (or his wife) wanted me to hear!
