Black Wrap

Re: Black Wrap

Very handy stuff--I've gotten it at B&H. I checked an old invoice and it's listed as Rosco Black Matte Cinefoil 12" x 50' ROCF1250B 23.95. It's made by Lee and some others as well, but it's all equivalent.

Re: Black Wrap

Black wrap is a must.  It's one of the four essentials in no-budget production, which are:

1) Black Wrap
2) Gaffer's Tape
3) Foam Core
4) a C-stand or two.

Honorable mention: a furnie pad.

There's practically nothing in the world you'll need to do that can't be accomplished by using one or more of the items above in some combination (or so it seems!)  Need a mattebox quick?  Black wrap and gaffer's tape.  Need a cucaloris?  Punch out some holes in foam core and hang it from a c-stand.  Don't have a c-stand handy? Gaffer's tape the foam core to something. Need a cookie and don't have any foam core?  Punch some holes in black wrap and use that.  Need to deaden sound in an echo-ey room?  Hand a furnie pad from a c-stand.  Need to make a snoot for one of your lights to control spill?  Black wrap... well, you get the idea.  ;)

Re: Black Wrap

I do.  I'm all set except for the black wrap...oh, and the c-stands...dammit, just when I thought I was ready to shoot  ;)

Thanks Barrys

Re: Black Wrap

Unfortunately we don't have it because we are not yet Rosco or Lee dealers, but I think I will ask my purchaser to inquire into it. ;) PS: We bought $$$ inventory from Cavision, and soon all their matteboxes and such things will be on our site :D

Re: Black Wrap

Duvatyne (Du Va Teen) Is also some good fabric to have in your lighting arsenal. Used to block unwanted light from coming into windows.

Re: Black Wrap

Barbizon has done me well. We have a local store. They carry black wrap. Their prices are always very close to the online prices.

Re: Black Wrap

The suggestion of Duvatyne for blacking out windows is one I used to do until I came across visqueen. This is black plastic sheeting found in hardware stores everywhere. Duv is only 4' wide, visqueen is 10' wide. Duv is much heavier than visqueen which makes visqueen easier to mount. Duv is much more expensive than visqueen. Duv is bulkier than visqueen so visqueen takes up much less room.
Anybody want to buy some lightly used duvatyne?

Just be careful with the visqueen if you are using it around hot lights or any source of heat. It will melt or catch fire. That's one advantage of Duv... it is flame-retardant, that's why it stinks and is so expensive. The visqueen is also shiny so it will cause strange reflections if it's in your shot. The Duv. is flat and absorbs the light better.

Re: Black Wrap-reply

Hi Jim
I visit B & H Photo in NYC a few times a month. If you can't get there in person ask for the lighting department via phone. You may not find it on the B & H's web site. They have it; I brought my black wrap from them. Good luck!
