Black & White & Color effect (Sin City)

I am making a music video for a song Ive had an idea for a while now. I want to fade his world out in black and white while still keeping a colored atmosphere at the same time, if that makes any sense. I have SpeedEdit as my editing software and it allows me to key out certain colors on a clip by ive seen this effect that im looking accomplished by using this software. (Selective Color) (AUX Selective Color) and (3-Band Color) I havnt quite got the effect I'm looking for. I was wondering if anyone knows how to do this. I'm wanting to show him on the screen as black and white while keeping the outside area in color. I have After Effects 6.5 if i can do anything with that let me know. thanks guys for any help.
 
Basically have two instances of the clip on top of each other and mask out the portion of the top clip that you want to be in color, then desaturate the bottom cliip in After Effect.
