Black Snake Moan

Saw the trailer for this at a showing of Snakes on a Plane and recently, Babel. Trailer can be viewed at Apple Trailers, here.

The first time I saw it, I was all geared up for SoaP so I really, really laughed at the trailer. Hard. I heard Sam L. saying, "Now I ain't go'n' let'chyoo off a dis' ***** chain"

The second time (@Babel), not so geared up. It struck me as a different kind of movie and one of my friends wouldn't stop saying, "Oh god," as if it was some story about rape.

Well on the IMDb page, it states Black Snake Moan as a Drama/Romance. So did I get it wrong? It's a romance now?

One of the reviews on IMDb says this:
There were excellent performances in a first rate drama by the two leads and by others: and secondly, the marketing for this movie will only bring disaster. We saw a lurid poster with chains and suggestive commentary implying some sort of wacko sexual relationship between Samuel Jackson and Cristina Ricci, whereas the movie has some real depth and some thoughtful ideas.

So the marketing is misleading... from someone's point of view.

Now on IMDb trivia it goes to say that it was based on a song:
Trivia for Black Snake Moan said:
The title of the film derives from the Blind Lemon Jefferson song recorded in 1927.

So the songs:
Original by Blind Lemon Jefferson
Newer version with Sam L.

I'm excited for this. It's interesting... now that it has me all confused.

I forgot to mention that writer/director of Hustle & Flow, Craig Brewer, directed this movie as well.

Me too. I saw the trailer a few weeks back and I am definitely on board. It looks really interesting.

Saw this last night. I have to say the marketing does the film justice and doesn't do the film justice. It's a gratuitous Christina Ricci in her undies fest for the first 45-60 minutes, but it evolves as her character evolves, so it isn't really gratuitous even if it is lurid (and delicious). It's got a lot more depth than the traditional sexploitation flick, but it uses many of the conceits of that genre. Just as Hustle & Flow was a tribute to southern hip-hop/rap, this is a tribute to the delta blues (one of my favorite musical genres) and I don't think I've ever seen a movie that encapsulates the spirit of that music as well, though I was disappointed that it wasn't taken deeper/darker/more twisted given what I know about the blues and its history.

It's no skinemax late night flick. Ricci looks plenty sexy throughout and she does show off her mammaries a couple times, but it's not pornographic.

Just saw this today. It's absolutely not what I expected (in a good way) and I came away from it much more impressed than I thought I would. It's really a very affecting story, about loss and anger and badly wounded people healing each other.

And about Christina Ricci in her underwear and less at the end of a chain. Which actually serves the story as well as being a lot of fun to watch.

also saw it today. EXACTLY what i expected, and I really liked it. If you're familiar with Hustle and Flow and have seen this trailer, you should have a good idea of what you're getting into. I think Craig Brewer is one of the most excited new filmmakers of the past couple years, can't wait for his next.

Saw this last night on DVD. Beautiful film. A great love story. This and She's So Lovely are probably my two favorite love stories.

I especially like the part when he bulldozes Rose's roses.

Actually, not really. I just wanted to use that sentence. I did like the film, though. Told a good story pretty well with some measure of originality.

I enjoyed BSM also. It was better than I expected. I thought Justin Timberlake was also decent, but a bad choice for the role.

I just rented Hustle & Flow, and will watch it tonight.

Hustle and flow was a great flick. I must of watched it 4 times now. I might pop it in tonight. Can't wait to see BSM.

How was Samual Jackson. Did he rip it? Very curious. I've been waiting to see him in another self defining roll like Jules in "Pulp Fiction".

Can't wait!

Samuel Jackson was pretty good to me. It seemed that his character was written to intentionally be "dynamic" as means of being realistic, while every single sub-character was incredibly 1-dimensional.

I'm really not sure what to think about his performance. It wasn't incredibly believable to me. I guess that means I didn't care for it. Others may (and probably will) disagree.

Finally rented Black Snake Moan from work. Absolutely hated it. Hated it. Same for Hustle & Flow. Both sucked. My opinion of course

hustle and flow i honestly didnt find it interesting at all.

BSM.

He spends the whole movie trying "to cure her of her wickedness" then at the club lets her bump and grind on every guy she comes across. What a waste of my time

But somehow she was able to just dance with the guys and not let them abuse her. Its not contradictory.
