Black Screen Fire Footage

Hello,

I have some footage of fire and I was wondering (also for future things like Muzzle Flashes) How do I get the black background out and just put it on the object I want on fire?

Here's what I did...

I put my video plug in below the fire plug in... I did some cookie cutting to get the amount of fire I want and have it in the exact place I wan't it in the video... Than I put a mask generator on the fire video... But it turned black and white and it just kinda... blended in... I just want to get the black background out and have the fire on my object... Can somebody please tell me?

Thanks again

First, put a color curve on it and flatten the lower left side to make the black really black. Keep an eye on it; ease up if you lose too much fine detail of the fire.

Then, apply a chroma key, and use the eye dropper to select the black.

You can always try it, but overlay mode tends not to let enough of the lower track through for it to be effective.

Yes u might also want to try add. Or Diiference. Ive sometimes used those successfully. But it depends what sort of final effect your looking for. If its a ball of fire like a building explosion. You can also take the fire plate and reduce its size to fit windows of the building whatever or even try a feathered bezier mask which you can animate. But if youve got pure black then ide suggest you try the chroma key filter with a good blur amount in the chroma controls. Also are u sure the black isnt an alpha channel. If it is you dont have to try any of this. You can just say use source alpha such as dirty, premultiplied etc. I think uncompressed avi's can have an alpha channel attached. Im sure tga sequences can. But isnt there some avi which can have alpha David ??

Yeah thats why i mentioned it to him in the previous line, but still wanted to check with you. Thanks for clarifying.
