Black Pro-mist vs White Pro-mist

I was talking to someone on set about the black and white pro-mist and I want to ask this community the same question. When would you use a black pro-mist, and when would you use a white pro-mist? DONT TELL ME WHAT THEY DO. I know that the white pro-mist creates white "flakes" while the black promist creates black "flakes." I want to know when would you use one over the other. The person I was talking to told me that they pretty much do the same thing and are used for the same effect but it would depend on the DP as to which to choose. For example, to glamourize the characters, you would use a 1/8 pro-mist to give a very slight effect. But the DP would choose whether that would be a 1/8 black or 1/8 white depending on his taste. And for something like a dream sequence, you would use something like a 1/2. Again, black or white depending on a DP. The guy I talked to was a 1st AC and he was using whites.

I like the Black Pro Mist because it softens things up and keeps my blacks nice and black. If using a BPM, I stick with a 1/4 up to a 1. I'm not a fan of the White Pro Mist because they milk out the blacks. They could be approproiate for some kind of flashback where you want a soft, hazy feel.

In the end, it's what look you want. There's no ste rules.

I'm with Scott. The Black Pro Mist controls the light better. The White Pro Mist causes the light to 'bloom' into the surrounding darks more.
