Just got my DVX from RUSH today and I start shooting in two weeks. I'm doing everything I can to make it look like film. WHat do you guys think of the filters are they worth, is one better than the other? I don't have a matte box, but 72mm filters are only 75$ at B+H. Money tight after getting the camera, but i would by the filter if you guys told me it would make it look more like film. :)

Thanks abunch

Pro Mists and Soft FX filters won't make your footage look more like film, they'll just make it look more like footage shot on film that used those filters...

The DVX is pretty good about giving a film look...if you light your scene like a movie, it will LOOK like a movie as it is.

Those filters give it a specific look, but the look of diffused footage, same as if they were used in front of a 35mm camera...

Re: Black pro mist or SoftFX?

Using one thread on filter should work fine, but if you stack two filters in front of the DVX lens, you'll probably get vignetting at the widest angle of the lens. In situations where you're using more than one filter, a mattebox is especially useful not only in saving time (just drop in the filter), but also in helping to avoid vignetting.

Of course, given the high price of matte boxes, the screw-on filters are in some case a better option. For one shoot, I used a fairly cheap Cokin P Series filter holder that screws onto the lens and allows use of glass filters that slide into slots on it, sort of like a very cheap, low-end matte box. It did the job, but I wouldn't use it as a full-time replacement for a good matte box, which sadly, I can't yet afford.

You might also want to consider some post-production solutions to modifying your image. Software plug-ins like Magic Bullet (www.redgiantsoftware.com) and Digital Film Tools (www.digitalfilmtools.com) can replicate the look of of a wide variety of filters and also offer various other pre-set and modifiable "looks" simulating the visual aesthetic of specific movies.

As far as the Promist, it has a great look. Go down to one of your rental houses and look at the two and see what ya like. I really like the look of the 1/4 or 1/2. BUT, thats just my 2 cents worth.

Re: Black pro mist or SoftFX?

Second on that -- after watching the DVD, I was surprised by how much better a light softnet looked as compared to the promist.

Re: Black pro mist or SoftFX?

Yeah I almost bought a promist a few weeks before those tests :)
