Black Magic Cinema Camera price drop: $1,999

WOW. I've used the BMCC and I already knew it can look awesome. But WOW. If it was a blind test, I would have no idea about which is which (except by looking at FoV and DoF).

1) How about just looking at her skin.

I am not going to get into a big defense of the BMCC camera. I do not have any intentions of buying one, but I think the cinematography.net test is pretty impressive, especially for the company that the camera was keeping there. I don't see that much difference in skin tones. The issue that I noted is that the graded shots from the camera showed more contrast for some reason. I think that the BMCC camera would take more post finessing than those high end cameras and that a one size fits all grade is not the best approach to post processing the footage. It is still pretty impressive.

Like I said, I do not have any intentions of buying one of the cameras. It is a first generation camera and I am not an early adopter type, but I think they are on to something.

I think Mico was saying that you can tell by looking at the skin, or at least get a general idea, of which is which. He owns a Blackmagic, and was one of the people waiting on it regardless of all the delays, etc.

It was pretty easy for me to tell them apart when it was listed as a blind test about a week before the results were published, especially when in motion.

Part of the tell is the Skin, Epic and C300 being the worse for me, Alexa and F55 pretty much a tie, and Blackmagic right behind them.

The issue is this: the camera hasn't been around for a year yet, and a lot of us are constantly beating it up in production and post to figure out what's what. I feel like we're just now having the greater breakthroughs in regards to how footage is captured, and how it's posted. You're right about people having to sort of adjust how they approach the Cinema DNG AND ProRes coming off of the camera.

It's different, any colorist what's worked with the footage will tell you that. Not bad different, just not plug-n-play copy-and-paste.

A number of the members over at BMCuser have been working on LUTs, progress is happening.

Oh, and yeah I'm an owner... several times over, in fact. xD Will definitely get a BPC and B4K when they're finally shipping.

The biggest difference I see between the Alexa and the BMCC is on the color charts. The white and brighter tones are more solid on the Alexa and the black and other darker tones are richer. The same difference with the BMCC and the C500, where the BMCC seems to have the advantage. But of course this is just what my eyes see on one test.

I've been looking at these all day. I still come to the same conclusion...that is...I dislike the F65 the most. I know that this might not be a popular comment but the image looks....well.....yellow. I hate that. It's like the yellow is burnt in or something. Anyways...for the most part they all look good. So...ditto Gillvane.

What I meant is not that the images look all the same, but that they all look good, and that, if you had to guess which is which, you'd have to know the special quirks of each camera: "this one looks slightly better so it must be the more expensive camera" won't work here. So I'm not surprised Kholi would know which is which, whereas I would be clueless (I've only used one of them: the one you can buy for about the same price as a short rental for any of the others).

The BMCC is amazing to provide film-like images in a raw format for such a low cost. But IMO its a far cry. I downloaded the raw files of the BMCC , Red and Alexa from the link mentioned in this thread. The Alexa is so much more film looking than any of the others. To me, the BMCC is just too video looking particularly in the face / skin tones. Perhaps actual motion files rather than stills would be more convincing.
Comparing images on the thread. Yes they look similar. Downloading actual files and comparison them yourself is a different story for me

They are reasonably close -
Our insular community may be splitting hairs

The sensor is noisier, the texture and CoC is less smooth, and there are some marginal differences in color science (all may be accommodated)
