black magic¿

so im looking into getting a REAL setup for my editing. thinking the ol' mac pro, FCP, etc. etc. now here's the question. I've been hearing through the grapevine that a mac with FCP will NOT export a full res HD file without the use of a "black magic" card. i can believe this, because when I was exporting a video from something we shot on HVX, at completely uncompressed (trust me I had the settings correct, I tried a million variations) there was still quality loss. I've been told that this is because the DVCPROHD codec still has compression and is not indeed raw. the issue is that I will soon be exporting a feature film that will screen in theaters and MUST have the proper way to export it. SO... exactly what black magic card do i get? how does it work? etc. etc. If anyone could explain this setup and process to me, I would be greatly appreciative!

:dankk2:

You can export into 10-bit uncompressed anytime you want from FCP. But if you want to *play* it out to a deck over HDMI or HD-SDI, then yes you need a Blackmagic card. What camera footage are you planning to work with?

i will more than likely be dealing with HVX200 720pn footage. but I already shot something on HVX200 at 720pn and edited it on my macbook with final cut pro 5.1.3. When I went to export, at uncompressed 10 bit, i had visual compression, the colors looked off, there were some splotches! i couldn't believe it. I tried a million different ways, everything I did was a failure, thats what makes me wonder if you need some sort of HD card. help? hehe

Post some stills- there shouldn't be any noise or glitches if your settings are correct. Again- there's nothing to be gained with this workflow unless you are going out to a deck or directly to a monitor. If you're working within the DVCPROHD world- stay with DVCPROHD as your format.
