Black Keying

I've done a tiny bit of chroma keying and understand [too well] the importance of even lighting and so forth.

I understand there is an advantage to using black for some effects like smoke or fire. Also is it advantageous to use black for 3d composites too?

Are the principals basically the same for keying with black? I downloaded a couple clips from Detonation Films to try a test, but they seem really dirty and I can't pull anything remotely usable. I assume I'm missing something as I have been able to clean up some messy green shots way better than I can with black.

Any tips from someone who has used black keying would be snap. precautions in shooting and post tips as well. Or should I just stick with green for effects?

Thanks

When you say 3D composits do you mean like 3D models?

Well..if your doing 3D work..like models or someting...you need to render out your CGI with an Alpha channel..then turn the Alpha channel on in ur NLE or AE or w.e you use.

If your compositing 3D work with live footage...best to do it in the program that created the 3D model.

As mentioend create a alpha channel when rendering 3D work. Output with Animation codec or other codec that supports alpha channel (most don't) Check your manual.

If you have fire or bright material in front of black you can first try a screen composite mode. If the bG is very bright then mix in a lumakey.
