Black and White

Re: Black and White

Don't do it in camera because post is much easier and plus you'll have color and b/w images. I never shot B/W on the dvx unless I am color blind.

Re: Black and White

Play with master pedestal to rich tha blacks.
Better to record as clean as posible (that means no white balance (use the preset for the 3200k)

Stay away from cinelike-d
just cinelike will be good

Of course use a monitor and set it to B&W.

In post play with the color levels (turn blue level as dow as posible) before down the saturation

Beware of the wardrove (the word is contrast)

What kind of look are you going for...

Doin it in post is the only chances you have.

Good luck.

Actually I'd like to respectfully disagree on some points.

Cine-Like D may be preferable if you're shooting black and white and are gonna go with harsher lighting (which you usually do in Black and White. You don't have color to seperate objects so you need to light more dramatically). CineD at least has knee protection while regular Cine-Like doesn't so that means you're highlights just blow out unnaturally.

Also personally I'd always still white balance no matter what. Just a habit of mine. Don't know if it actually helps or takes away from the B&W image. But at least i know, if by some reason I decide NOT to go B&W, I'll have usuable color footage.

yeah, I would definitely make sure your lighting is more dramatic than usual. B&W looks pretty bad with just a flat gray tone. Concentrate on the shadows and the highlights, becasue thats whats gonna give your subject its depth and definition

can you elaborate on why to turn down the blue? I'm not challenging what you said, rather trying to understand why i'd be doing that and what i should be looking for...thanks.
