Hey guys...

I'm shooting my flick in b/w and wondered if you had any advice. I 've been told to use some warm filters with my cam, oranges and reds to increase contrast... whaddya think?
Is there a way to dial down to see b/w on the viewfinder on the cam?

Neil, You should probably just go for the best (color) picture possible and then convert to B/W in post. This way if you ever need a color shot you'll have it. Always easier to remove color than to add it in post.

I've never tried the desaturation of color image recorded with B&W filters, so I dunno.

Yes, a deep red filter does a number on contrast in the red/cyan range particularly... red objects go white, deep cyan objects go black. Any color filter treats its color as white, its opposite as black, and all inbetween as shades of gray.

As for shooting bl;ack and white in camera, I say make up your mind beforehand and do it right on set. If you go B&W in camera, you skip the recompression in post that results from image reprocessing. Not a huge hit, but when you're working in minidv, every bit helps.

In case it isn't clear, you shoot the dvx in B&W by turning chroma all the way down...

turning chroma all the way down in camera, will not give you a b&w picture!!!
you can preview b&w in monitor, by turning there chroma to zero.
