Hi,

Im hoping there is a plug in for this, or a fairly easy way of acheiving it.

I have a client that wants one element from this promotional video to stay in color, with the rest of it turned black and white.
The element is liquid glass, and we want to highlight the orange heat it produces. Is there something out there you people know of? other than taking it into photoshop and cutting it out one frame at a time?

Thanks...

Mike

In after effects theres a default plugin called "Leave Color"
use the eyedropper tool and select the color;tweak out the tolerance, amount to de color, and edge softness to your likings.
Hope it works out for ya, good luck.

Any type of plug-in that targets a single color won't give good result because inevitably you're going to get bleeding from other similar colors in the scene. The best way to do it is to simply mask out the object in AE. Don't do it in Photoshop. The masking tool in AE or any compositing program should make this a fairly simple task.

If the glass is the only orange thing ever in frame, you may be able to do this with secondary colour correction (at least, that's what it's called in Vegas, I don't know what software you're using). But if there are also other orange things on screen, some sort of frame-by-frame masking will additionally or instead be necessary.

Sin City uses this effect heavily - after that came out, a lot of film makers worked out how to do similar effects in their particular software, so searching on 'Sin City' and the name of your software is likely to uncover some helpful information.

If your on a mac and you have Color. Do a secondary color correction using the curves graph and this can be done very easily. Creativecow.net has some good tutorials for it.

thanks for all the suggestions. I think I have it figured out now; I'll post results if you are interested.

cheers-
Mike

Final cut pro will do this, its called the Limit effect.

Add three way colour corrector then at the bottom it says 'The limit effect'

Click the triangle to open it up, and you get some sldiers that you use to select the colour. Then desaturate everything else, leaving that colour visable.
