Bizarre Vegas Crash

Bag of Douche
Wow this is wierd, I've been working on a project for about three weeks now. I am trying to render out a sequence I have been working on for some time and I'm running into a little problem.

Everytime the render gets to a certain point (the same point every single time) it crashes on me, giving me "Due to an Unknown Error" with the following details:

Here's what I'm thinking, it's either a problem with the dll in the vegas folder, sftrans.dll , but now I have pretty much falisified that claim by reinstalling vegas, and I'm still having trouble.

It seems to be referencing kernel32, which as we all know, is a core DLL in windows. Here's what I'm thinking, virus. The only thing I'm dubious about is reinstalling windows XP and wiping out my harddrives.

Comments/Suggestions?

Heres the logfile:

Exception 0xC0000005 is usually a memory allocation problem. And, within that, usually reading beyond the "end" of the value.

It's not an error with Vegas, or even Windows...as such. It's just trying to do something it can't do. For instance, it may have to create and maintain X amount of buffers in memory to handle all the CC or effects or whatever, but gets tangled up trying to fit it all into memory.

Try turning EVERYthing else off while rendering. If Vegas will let you, minimize the program while it's doing it (most visible Windows controls in the program require a certain amount of resources to be shown...even when not being actively used).

You'll see the same error pop up in a LOT of programs, even Office, when things get complex.

Try changing you performance setting to best performance.

START/CONTROL PANEL/SYSTEM/ADVANCED/PERFORMANCE SETTINGS/ADJUST FOR BEST PERFORMANCE.

go to advanced tab and change everything to programs.

So is there any way for it to use other memory other than having to get more ram, which I will do eventually but I'm broke atm.

That's it right? It's running out of memory to supply the function it is trying to achieve, I'm actually only running this with 256mb ram, a p4 1.8ghz processor and sheer determination.

Thanks guys

Ouch, there is your problem right there. Your a little under specked for vegas, I think the minimum required is at least 512Mb, even 256Mb running winXP is a little iffy. If you have one stick of 256ram in your computer, you can probably get a second for about 40 bucks, depending on your computer. But running vegas, or any ram intesive program with such little ram is going to give you problems.

Adding more memory might help. You should, anyway...256 is not really enough.

But don't be surprised if this error still pops up. If it's a resource allocation error, more memory might not help. For instance, if Windows is written to only be able to handle 1000 buffers at a time, but something needs 1002...it will still choke on it.

It's probably due to me having 7 layers of a heavily rotoed element, all with atleast 11 effects on them and multiple layers of transparancy... ontop of 3 layers of backround each with their own effects and transparancies...

But it looks so cooool!

Hmm... maybe I have to tone it down then... I guess this would be one of the advantages of doing all this kind of work on an inferno system or something eh...

Hmmm....is there any way to splice separate renders...like do half of it, then the other half and glue 'em together?

Maybe do the half-n-half thing, but render to a new track, then put them end-to-end.

The complex renders would already be done, so the "output render" would just be the codec.

Never tried it...but it seems to me it might work ok. But, just to be safe, I'd pick a transition point to be the "halfway" mark, just in case the splice doesn't go as smoothly as you'd want.

Dan

UPDATE: Ok - a whole new problem, I was working on the project, I alleviated the problem, now there's this whole new enigma...

What happened was I saved the project I was working on, and turned off the machine, came back a few hours later, turned it on and fired up vegas, but before I could get into the program, as it was loading a little box popped up - ERROR - giving me the following log:

What the hell is going on here, it was working fine just a few hours ago, the only major thing that I did was save it when I had added a few .pngs into the mix...

Ideas on what is causing this and how to alleviate it?
