Bioshock

I have seen many a videogame in my life, and never thought a game would ever approach the level of art, until I played Bioshock. This game is a marvel to behold, playing out like the fever dream of Alex Proyas (the one who made Dark City, not I,Robot) and David Lynch. The cinematography (and yes, I would call it that) is dark and gorgeous, as is the art deco production design, and is further augmented by eerie and atmospheric sound design. On top of that the gameplay is fluid and the story, about an Ayn Rand type genius whose plans went amok, totally involving. It's art, this game, and is making me consider a switch into video game creation. Graphical capabilities will only improve, and in 5 years, we'll be seeing photorealism that will require the talents of real visual artists.

I agree. The realism and design in video games is getting ridiculous... I was playing COD the other and I realized that some of the levels (like Chernobyl around the pool) are just amazing, and you just run right through them in the game... I bet some people don't even notice.

Bioshock had a sweet art deco design without a doubt.

I absolutely loved bioshock, it was a blast to play threw, and had a reall unique story that kept me interested. And the UT3 engine is amazing!

bioshock was pretty good... ending was quite dissapointing but the game was good...

This game has two different endings depending on how you played the game. If you harvested the little girls for energy, you got one, if you didn't, you got another.

I've been dying to get this game, hopefully soon. All the reviews I've read have said it has a very immersive environment.

Oh and there is only one Alex Proyas as far as I know.

I wasn't being literal. I meant the guy that made Dark City was awesome, and the guy that made I,Robot sucked, even if they were the same person.

Yeah, great game for sure. I love all the sounds, and old 40's type deco music that is playing all over the city. Very cool game, lots of fun to play.

I think its because some film methodologyies are transfering over to games, every year more and more money is being spent on developing titles.

Don't forget hardware power is increasing. As well as game engines, but not untill we see proper real time GI + raytracing (and a dash of HDRI) not the quasi implementation that we have now, but proper realtime calculations, then you will just think OMG!

But I'm still waiting :) slowly getting there, maybe 5th Generation consoles might approach something like final fantasy CG.
