Bing search engine

There's no denying that Google's search results have been superior to anything else out there. But last month Microsoft launched Bing and it might be worth a look. Even if you're a Microsoft hater.

I've been using it for about two weeks and I'm starting to really like it. The results are just as good as Google and it's a lot more fun to use. Here are two sample searches for the word "monotony":
Bing "monotony"
Google "monotony"

Bing wins by having the first result be the actual definition.

The look and feel of Bing is definitely much easier on the eyes than Google. Also, one of the cooler features is the video previews when searching for videos. The web results also have a "preview" link off to the side.

Habits are hard to break so it's going to take a miracle for them to get people to switch from Google but they're off to a good start. What do you think?

Uhh, is it just me or doesn't the Google search also start with the definition being the first result? Or are you talking about actually being able to read it (which you can with the google result under the link)

Plus I go to dictionary.com for my definitions.

Honestly, we've talked about it in our prod admin class, and the teacher was testing it and his results were that sometimes Bing would be better for one search, and google better for another.

So when it comes down to it, I hate Microsoft, my browser already has a google search in the top right corner (if it comes with explorer doesn't matter, cause I use mozilla), and like you said, habit. Google does the job, why fix what wasn't broken? Bing will have to give me more than what it offers for me to switch.

graphically, bing is more interesting.

but the results from google are easier for me to read.

I disagree that Bing is easier on the eyes. I, like many people, prefer functional and clean, which Google delivers. The actual search results look identical, except that Bing appears to use meta tags more to get their descriptions. Which is kind of nice.

However, I think the name 'bing' is a poor choice. There are two major problems. The first is that Bing already came up as something before they used it; names, words, phrases. Google is just the one thing, that's why it works. Much more importantly, they said that they want the name to become a common verb like Google and Googling has. But 'binging' is the present tense of binge. That's not good at all.

Since bing is pronounced to rhyme with king, seems to me binging (as in searching) would be pronounced with a hard 'g' (like saying bringing without the 'r'), not binging (bin-jing) as in overdoing something.

What was 'bing' before it came out?

Bing 1

Definition: A heap or pile; as, a bing of wood.

I never knew that... and I don't think that when I think of "bing."

The only other thing I can think of is the last name of Chandler on Friends, or a phonetic word you use when representing a metalic hit.

To me the main definition is when someone goes "bing" when a bell rings.

Maybe it'll work to their advantage. I mean people don't have to make a word out of bing, they don't have to say their binging, or bingalinging, or whatever. Heck, people won't already because of google, whether the word 'bing' has a meaning behind it or not. Even if google had a meaning (which it sort of does), it would still be the same.

I think the name works. It's fun, simple, and it does make you think of something.

Yes, it would. But how often do you pronounce what you're typing? How it works as a keyword and typed otherwise would be my concern, not how it's used verbally.

Well when you type on twitter, you're "tweeting", not "twittering", so it may work the same for Bing, if people insist on turning it into a verb.

Ha! I thought of Chandler from friends too. :)

Another search engine which is trying to challenge Google is called Cuil. They actually claim to have MORE pages in their index and it was developed by previous employees of Google.

Still prefer Bing though. It takes a while to adjust but it's worth it. Seriously thinking about incorporating it into Isara's search, maybe as secondary results.

I don't like Bing at all. It's on my default page but I have to use google to get thorough search results.

I also despise google's global conquest and private info stockpiling philosphy. If Bing gets better I'll be happy to switch.

(While I'm here, does dvxuser still have the spellchecker? I reinstalled windows recently and iSpell but, now I can't find it.)
