Bin Headings Question

There are two features in Avid that I like and I want to see how to do them in FCP if they can be done.

The first is creating new headings in the bin. In Avid you just click an empty space and you can create a new heading. I tried and also CTRL clicked but neither worked.

The second is something called Custom Sift which allows you to search within the bins for clips that have certain information in the given headins.

If either of these is possible can someone tell me how to do them, thanks.

Both are possible, just not "like" in Avid. There's a book "Final Cut Pro for Avid Editors" by PeachPit Press, part of the Apple Pro Training Series. It is great, my students in my classes who are migrating from Avid love it. Apple is currently upgrading it, too.

You can't create your own personal comment heading from scratch in FCP, as it already exists. Right click (get rid of the one button mouse, get a two button with scroll wheel, makes working with FCP a lot faster and easier), or control click with a one button mouse, on the heading bar in the Browser.

You can choose what headings to show and what not to show. You have FOUR "Master Comments" headings to use for your own notes, you have a couple of "Lable" columns you can use for this purpose, you have a "Comment A" and a "Comment B" columns to use for this, you have "Log Notes" column to use for this, you have LOTS of choices to select from in order to allow you to form a workflow that suits your personal needs.

And you can customize the headings that show and don't show, the order they are in, and save that as a Custom Heading Layout that can travel with you from one FCP system to another.

As for searching for clips in your Browser, the keyboard shortcut is command + F. Or Edit > Find. It is very flixable. You can omit, or not omit column headings, specify data in those heading to omit or not omit from your search, make combinations, very flexible.

If Avid can do it, FCP can do it. And remember that there are at least three ways to do just about everything in FCP, sometimes more. It is very flexable and can adapt to just about any work flow you may need.
