Big screen goodness

I am a fanboy of the DVX100. I admit it. But my fan-fulness is predicated on the fact that this camera enables us to capture cinematic imagery for less than $5K (including assorted attachments!).

I've been working for a long time now to emulate the look of film in my work, but I've been worried that footage from the DVX will not look so good when shown on the big screen. Lots of us on this forum and elsewhere have been engrossed with the same concerns.

Not to worry!

Yesterday, I burned a quick and dirty demo reel on DVD-R and schlepped over to my preferred media super outlet, to see it on their big screen demo equipment. They have an 11-foot home theater projection room with comfy couches and stuff, and I asked the sales guy to drop my DVD in the progressive player.

I was looking for pixelation and indications that my video wasn't a high-end production. I didn't see any. The material looks and sounds great on high-end projection equipment. It was better than I could have hoped for.

So I hereby forswear any more concerns about how great this camera is. The plain fact is that the DVX delivers the goods, if you capture your content as if it were for film.

Oh, the other cool thing - I turned around after my reel had played a couple times, and saw that 6 people had stopped and were watching it. Now THATs affirmation.

Re: Big screen goodness

That's great Speed! I have been dying to try similar tests.

Anything standout at all to you? Meaning, would you adjust anything differently in post or just getting a great image on the reference monitor as you normally would apply as is? (Be it 32" TV or 11 foot screen)

Re: Big screen goodness

If it looks good on a properly calibrated monitor, it should look good on a properly calibrated LCD projector.

The demo room they had set up was ideal, of course, and dark enough to really see picture detail, and I was sitting back at least 15 feet, so that might not be representative test.

And yes, I love my tool.
