Big screen, big noise...huh?

So I finally splurged and purchased one of those 46" Samsung flat screens (UE46D6500 here in Europe) - I basically wanted to be able to stream stills from i-devices, to connect my mac mini and of course watch DVDs (HDMI connection to a generic Sony consumer player).
Last night was the turn of "Frida" http://www.miramax.com/frida/.
There are plenty of mid and low light scenes - contrast between darkly lit brickwork and skin tones, or other details that are in shadow (such as dark grey clothes) - and in these cases....aaargh.... my wife and I both saw some pretty horrible gray/green dark pixelation.
It was pretty horrible...it's like a chipped tooth... your tongue keeps on running over it, and we kept fixating on those awful shadow tones...pretty much stole the pleasure of watching the film.

My question is: what is the issue here? Crappily mastered DVD? Crappy player? Screen needs to be further tweaked from the standard setup...? Crappy screen?... Or...?

Thx

Paul

Someone correct me if I'm wrong here, but I believe the standard setup is ALWAYS crap. Samsung makes fine TVs, I have one myself. Also, you should get a blu-ray player now.

First, get you an AVIA disc, or search the AVForum.com site for the correct method on calibrating your set. The WORST thing you can do for the image and for the set is to leave it on the stupid VIVID mode. STANDARD is typically too bright and saturated as well. You want the TV to display the image - not glow it.

I"m no expert, but I have seen some DVDs cause this pixelated shadow issue. Blu Ray will help.

If you don't want to spend for the AVIA disc, there are DVD's that have a THX optimizer menu. It does a reasonably good job at calibrating your monitor. DVD's I know have it, Star Wars fims, Indiana Jones films, Pixar films.

True...forgot about that. Also any Criterion DVD has color bars, at the least.
