Big Problems importing to FCP

Taking the advice of several in this forum, I purchased a relatively inexpensive Canon ZR100 to use strictly as a playback machine for digitizing footage shot on my DVX100a. I'm using an iMac G5 with a 250GB G-Drive as a scratch disk, but I don't seem to be able to control the camera through FCP (i.e. can't rewind, play or fast forward). Any clues how to rectify this?

Are you trying to daisy chain the camera through the hard drive? That's a no-no. It must be directly connected to the computer. Also capturing to a G-Drive if it's FW400 is going to be a problem too as you'll have performance issues. You should be capturing to the faster internal drive and then moving captured media over.

Noah...Camera is directly connected to the computer, not the G-Drive. I also tried to make the scratch disk the internal hard drive and shutting off the G-Drive, and I still couldn't control the camera. I just took the thing out of the box...I would love to know if this is a permanent problem so I can return it to B&H!!! Do you know of a good cheap camcorder to use as a playback device?

Device Control setting.

Device Control setting.

Ross,

Is your Device Control set up correctly? In your case, it should be set as
*Firewire NTSC.* And you might need to restart FCP so that it can
reset itself. Make sure you hook up your camera before you start
FCP, too. Some cases, there are cameras, which is not able to read
timecode from other cameras. It might happen more likely if one's
made by different brand. I haven't used your camera, so I'm not telling
you based on my experience. Hope this will help you.

Also, as far as capturing directly to your external HDD through firewire
400 shouldn't matter. Firewire's fast enough and made for video handling.

My friend and I were just discussing this subject. Why do you think we shouldn't
daisy chain a camera through an HDD or two?

I've done this for over two and a half years with my Lacie 250Gb d2 Extreme HDD
through Firewire 400 connection. Firewire 400 should be fast enough for handing
DV materials. I've captured DVCPro50 video a few times as well with my HDD
and didn't have any problem.
