BIG Predicament

Ok. I think I may have a BIG problem.

I'm 1/2 way thru a 4 day music vid shoot, when the arrogant lead vocalist decides to rip up and hide the storyboards we made.
In his drunken stupor, he goes off how we don't need that garbage, and what ever happened to gorilla style shooting of videos....but he wants to keep going with the original idea for the video...sans script!
We have 3 actors, 6 wardrobe changes, 4 locations, and a ridiculous amount of lighting setups....gorilla style??????? lol

Question: Do I kill him or myself :engel017:

Lesson learned: Make multiple photocopies when dealing with band members that like to drink [read: all].

He's paying you, right? If the product turns out worse than he thought - his fault. Make sure he knows that. Proceed the best you can and hope for the best.

Did you have a script in the first place, and create a shot list from said script, that is the basis for the storyboards?

Or were the storyboards The Script, and no shot list???

As a note, he apparently is working 'gorilla' style... many people who shoot films 'guerilla' style, shoot from a script, just can't pay or get the permits for the locations, and so, must 'run and gun'. (or at least shoot from a van across the way...)

But if you are the director... as best you can, recreate at least the top looking down diagrams of what the storyboards were about... that would give you camera and talent placements, as well as coverage.

Walk.

Take yor gear to the next job, have your attorney collect payment for time spent (wasted), warn others about this clown. Don't enable this behavior. If you ripped up his songbook and told him to "wing it" he'd scream bloody murder.

Attach a significant emotional event to his negative behavior. Warn others by telling them the truth about what happened to you.

Well luckily we do have copies since I use Toonboom to make them, and it's a good $$$$ gig, but it just pisses me off that now I feel like gotta walk on eggshells for this jerk, just so I can finish this and get the other half of my payment.
The guy went as far as to fire a guy on set that wasn't even crew! LOL
Perrone, seriously, I'd walk, but I don't have another gig for a couple more weeks...and a guys gottsa EAT! But I do just wanna punch him right in the face....I think even the guys in his band do, but alas I'm not a violent guy.

Maybe I'll get my grip to do it.

Maybe I'll get my grip to do it.

If you need the gig, then here's my solution.

Superglue a ball bearing into his car tire's air caps. Only leaks air when it's screwed tight, and the tire itself has no leaks.

May not help the situation, but at least help you feel better about it.

As much as I'd like to do all the above, I realize that it's only really one guy, and I've met worse.

I just have to think " if I can suffer 2 more days-2 more days-2 more days"

.... then I can get my follow focus rig and monitor ....probably worth it in the end.... and I'll never see them again...with any luck, that is.

Just explain that 'guerilla' filmmaking is just so 90's... heck Perry Como did guerilla filming (who knows what Perry Como did, or didn't do...), but really ad lib sort of went out of vogue when Jimi Hendrix burnt his guitar at Monterey... ok, initiated years of imitations...

What right does the lead singer have to do that? None. It's a total violation of the hard work of the crew to trash your storyboard. It shows absolutely no respect and a massive amount of arrogance. In your situation, I'd have a hard time not getting really angry at them and I admire your decision to keep going.

Hopefully you'll have much nicer people in other gigs!

That sucks what happened with you. I hope it all works out. I hate arrogant people that do stupid stuff like that.

This is why I stay away from music videos and indie bands... lol

Bands tend to be the most arrogant - call me cynical but most of them seem convinced they'll be the next band that'll be sealed into immortality no matter what: as if they're the next Lupe Vélez or something!

if u need the money then I would say just finish it out with him. If you are going to use it for a reel or something you should try and tell him that this is what you do and he needs to respect that also He wouldn't like you telling him how to perform. If you aren't into the project then your not going to give your all for the project.

Finished the vid...got paid in cash :love4: so now can think about getting my follow focus and monitor.... and it's nice to know that's over with.

Glad to hear it turned out well in the end for you. Did you end up following your storyboards pretty much, or did you toss 'em and go guerilla?

Enjoy the new FF and monitor!

I rarely visit this section of 'user... but I'm glad you stuck it out. Every cash gig I've ever done has had potential deal-breakers and ridiculous personalities involved. This experience will go into your idea file and also better prepare you for the next time you deal with somebody like this.

Video cameras are freak magnets... if you become unflappable you'll become unstoppable.

We ended up stickin' to our plan. Stroke a singer's ego enough, you can get them to do pretty much anything. :)
