I want to put big lamps (250-650W incandescent ) into china balls, and I'm looking for the safest, most diffused, most convenient way of doing it. I really want to avoid photofloods because they are always failing at the slightest touch; I am looking at halogens (and CFLs but lets save daylights for another thread).
Some options I've been looking at:
http://www.filmtools.com/e.html to put pin type halogens 125w to 650w in an edison base.
http://www.filmtools.com/nehoba2532qu.html 250W Halogens in edison base
Or I bought a couple of the replacement bases for Arri 650W fresnels in hopes of making a fixture myself before I saw the above readymade options.
In all these cases, my primary concern is the orientation of the bulbs... they would be hanging down which is not ideal from a heat perspective since the heat will tend to fry the fixture and cord. I've been thinking about making some sort of crossbar like a trapeze that would go between the struts that spring china balls open, holding the bulb upright. But wondering if that is too much hassle to rig.
And in most of these cases the lack of diffusion in the bulbs themselves might reduce the diffused quality of the light.
I'm curious what others have done to get high wattage bulbs into china balls, beyond photofloods.
