big audio problem

Help! Can anybody figure this out? When I import quicktime video footage into FCP, I'm always losing the audio portion, and only able to use the video alone. Is this normal? How can I include the audio send; I can hear and see the quicktime clip on the computer, but it won't import the audio portion for use in FCP. Can I correct this? Your help would be significantly appreciated, as I'm completely stuck!

check your FCP audio outputs. If your using a fw deck or camera, make sure audio follows video.

I'm importing the quicktime file into FCP from the mac hard drive, where it sits on the desktop. It's stock footage that I downloaded from the internet, like the Internet Archive, to use for a documentary. It isn't that my FCP audio monitor is out, but that these quicktime movies that I've previewed from the computer desktop, won't import the audio (only the video image) into the FCP browser. Is this normal in any way? What could it be? Please!

What version of FCP are you using?

What do you mean you're not getting the audio? If you view/listen to the clip in the viewer is there still no audio or only on the timeline? When an imported clip is loaded into the viewer, if you click on the audio tab (or tabs if its mono), is there anything in the wave form at all? Or are there no audio tabs at all?

In quicktime, which apparently can play back the audio, check out the movie's details/information. Perhaps there is some kind of weird codec being used. Using Quicktime have you tried exporting out and using a different compressor and then tried loading that into FCP? I know that would be a pain, but if you need the footage, perhaps that might be something that works, even if tedious and annoying.

cheers.

I'm using FCP version 5.0.4

After I've downloaded the Quicktime footage into the Mac HD, I'm able to see/hear, preview the clip, and it's all fine. But once the clip is imported to the FCP browser from the Mac HD, the audio portion doesn't import - only the video. The audio track doesn't even appear in the timeline... Is there some setting in FCP that is off? I've never used/tried Quicktime to export, but I'd do anything to get the audio happening. Any suggestions????

If it helps, I've noticed a pattern to the problem. It's the mpeg quicktime files that aren't importing audio. Files with mov. at the end are importing both audio and video. What could be the problem with the mpeg quicktime files that inhibit audio importing into the FCP browser? It's a mystery to me!!!

Your MPEGs are MUXed and will not bring in audio. MUXed files are not meant for editing, but for distrubution. If it's MUXed, it's probably highly compressed, too. You may be able to use something like ffmpegX to de-mux those clips.

Thank you. Interesting. How would I find ffmpegX or whatever is needed to de-mux the mpeg footage?

Don't have an MPEG here to test it, but can't you use QT Pro to do it? If you export out from QT and just use a different compressor and make an MOV, rather than another MPEG, will QT Pro de-mux it?

cheers.

I tried the mpeg file through quicktime to make a MOV file, but it also exported the original without audio (the quicktime settings were in default mode to make a quicktime movie). I'm downloading ffmpegX now and will let you know how it works. If anyone has experience with all this please let me know.
Thanks.

Well, thanks very much for your feedback and input! I managed to download ffmpegX (you also have to download mencoder, mplayer, and control click to download mpeg2enc, all on the same site that BenB mentioned) and did a test this morning...I've got audio now to import mpeg's for FCP!
Thanks again guys for being there!
