Better Transitions in Vegas?

Re: Better Transitions in Vegas?

OK, a few words about transitions in general . . .

LESS is MUCH, MUCH more. Star wipes and page curls are cool, but they should be used extremely sparingly. Most of your transitions should be straight cuts; fades and dissolves can be useful to denote passage of time, but a specialized transition should be reserved for very rare instances. Too many, and they look *very* amateurish, and besides, they lose their punch if there are too many.

That being said, the transitions in Vegas are very customizable. And if that's not enough, you can create any transition you could imagine using cropping, track motion, and other effects tools within Vegas.

But what did you have in mind?

Well for the most part I have only used fades and dissolves so far ... The rest have looked a bit awkward to me. I am very new to video though so I am not exactly sure what I am looking for ... ;D

I will play some more and see what else I can learn ...

Hard cuts, fade through black, and the occasional fade/dissolve are more than enough (although if you have the time, masked transitions can be fun and different)

Re: Better Transitions in Vegas?

Try thinking about using visual transitions with your content. Get creative. For a simple example, a shot of a spinning fan dissolves to a shot of spinning wheel, say on a stationary bike. Use similar shapes or motion or color.

Those creative transitions are the coolest and most impressive of all. And used carefully, they can have the impact you're looking for, without screaming "amateur!"

Is there a name for these types of transitions? I see them used a lot in television shows especially.
