Better suspension system + wind Jammer for Sennheiser MKH 50 + 416 ? (Rycote vs Rode)

Hello,

I am looking to get a proper suspension system for the Sennheiser MKH 50 and 416 to mount on a boom pole, but need some expert advice.

Using Rycote’s website, they indicated the following:

The Rycote Windshield Kit 2 appears to be designed to fit the MKH 50 snuggly, but is too small for the 416.

The Rycote Windshield Kit 4 will fit the 416 – but not the MKH 50, it’s too big for it.

I would prefer not having to purchase two separate suspension systems for each microphone.

Enter the new Rode Blimp Windshield with Rycote Lyre Suspension:

I could be wrong, but it seems like on the Rode, you adjust the location of the suspension points for different sized microphones, so it looks like as long as you do that, and the length is under 325mm, you’re good to go for whatever size.

For those in the know, would this be a better purchase? Could a MKH-50 and 416 both be effectively boomed from the Rode Blimp? It’s certainly cheaper, but is there a reason for that? Like lesser build-quality? Would having all that extra space in front of the MKH-50 negatively affect the audio quality?

Thanks for your help.

UPDATE:
Realized I can swap out the zeppelins with the Rycote system.

You shouldn't need a blimp for the 50.. assuming you'll be using the 416 for exteriors. Generally the Invision mount clips fit a wider span diameter (17 to 22mm for instance) than the older mounts and are front/rear adjustable.. don't know anything about the Rode except their other mounts are prone to breakage .. or so I've read. The K-Tec system is worth looking into as well.

Thanks for the thoughts Rick.

Just as a general question, is there any advantage to having a smaller zeppelin size?

Aside from the weight factor... it depends. Different sized Zeppelins are generally designed for a certain mic or groups of mics (for instance, a 21 to 25 cm interference tube shotgun). So even if a mic fits inside the enclosure with plenty of room to spare, performance could be adversely affected. I would stay away from the cheap 'one-size-fits-all' blimps.

You have various options,

You could get the Rycote Kit 2 for the MKH 50 and add an EXT-2 2-module extension to change it into a 4 - this should work fine and be relatively inexpensive. Though you would need an extra 4-module Windjammer for the extended windshield.

Alternatively you could get a Rycote Cyclone, which is much better all round (I am just about to get one of these). More info HERE.

Or...

You could get a Rycote Medium Super-Shield and a small front pod for when you want it shorter for the MKH 50. Again you would need both a small super-shield Windjammer and a medium super-shield Windjammer to cover both options.

I hope this helps.
