Better Slow Motion with 24p Footage in 29.97 timeline

Unfortunately, the thirty hours of footage we have shot was done in 24p(regular) and we are working in a 29.97 timeline (so we can't use any of those cool 30fps into the 24p timeline tricks). Our slow-mo sucks (stutters, etc.) and with a bunch of amateur kid actors, their sense of the dramatic pause is never there--we need to slow things down often to keep the pacing right. Any ideas about how to get better resolution slow mo (I'm using FCP HD) with what we have? thanks for the help.

If you have coverage of the scene (multiple angles), can you cut away to a different shot (say to the listener in a conversation) to add time and adjust your dramatic timing?
