Best YouTube Encode Settings For Premiere Pro DSLR Footage

If you give it more "bits" to start with, then you can get a good encode when YouTube puts it through the ringer. It will make your files big, but look at duplicating Blu-ray format settings (i.e. 2 pass VBR at 25-30MBps) in the .MP4 container and you should be happy with the results.

Whatever you do, don't resort to using the YouTube presets. I've never been happy with the output.

Yeah Iv'e never used the youtube presets. Iv'e tried Mpeg2, F4V and MP4. Iv'e tested 8 through 50mbs no difference. I haven't tried the Blu-ray presets yet........hmm

Don't use the BR presets outright, just take a look at the settings then duplicate them under the H.264 listing (in AME at least).

Here's what I do in Adobe Media Encoder:

Format: H.264 (pick any preset, you're going to change it anyway)
Profile: High
Level: 4.2
Render at Maximum Depth
VBR, 2 pass
Target Bitrate: 25
Maximum Bitrate: 30
Set key frame distance: (frame rate * 5) 24p would equal 120, 30p would be 150, so on and so on
Maximum Render Quality

Audio should be Stereo AAC, 48Khz (can introduce sync errors if different), 320kps.

Try that and see if you're happy with the final result on YouTube.

Thanks! I'll give it a try! Do you have any examples online I could watch with that encoding?

Are you watching 360p encodes in full screen? Because if you have a monitor that has high resolution (1920x1080 or 1920x1200 and higher), it's going to look terrible, that's just the nature of it.

EDIT: Also, your YouTube link says the video is private.

YouTube is not going to do you justice, ultimately, with it's downrezzing. It's just going to do it quick-and-dirty to save on encode time. I'm afraid if you're really looking for excellent 360p, the only option is to upload in 360p doing a proper downres with your media encoder.

Also, some videos will be able to downrez better than other depending on what content they are featuring (i.e. videos with little movement will look "cleaner").

Do you have an example of a 1080p video that looks great at 360p?

There was blockiness immediately in the transition, blockiness in the water...not sure what you're seeing. The sand is very blocky too. The dog is running in the frame, but he's not very large in it.

EDIT: There's a lot of overexposure too, which may help with the perceived level of macroblocking.

Hmm....It seems to me that anything in focus wasn't blocky. But you can see when the camera follows her there's no blockiness like in my video.

Is there a way for you to take a screenshot of what you are seeing? There may be something wrong with your Flash plugin or Internet browser. I don't see anything worse in your video than in the one you linked.

Not sure if this will do it justice.

I was starting to assume it might be your computer. I see you are running Chrome, is that on OSX or Windows? What machine is it (i.e. MacBook Pro 15", Sony F22YXY or whatever they dreamed up as a model number, ect.).
