best workflow for export for theatre screen

Howdy all,

I am a film student here in KC. A bunch of us are showing some short films we did at the art house theatre here. Can people give me their pointers/workflow to get the best quality print on mini DV to be shown on the big theatre screen?

Is it worth using a program like photozoom to uprezz? That's probably not worth it if it's going back to miniDV, right? As of now I've cropped for widescreen from inside vegas, exported as NTSC DV widescreen .avi and printed that to tape. Is that my best option?

Also, I don't mind grain much, but I think it's going to be super grainy when it really gets blown up... are there any tricks for smoothing out some of that grain? Just using the standard noise tools in AE?

Thanks for any advice!

(I searched for this, but didn't find anything...if someone knows it has been spoken of before and knows where to point me, I'm happy to read prior posts on the topic.)

Is it 24p (as in, is it native 24p on your timeline)? If so, you'll want to export to mini-DV using 2-3-3-2 pulldown.

Hey David,

yea it's 24p and I'm no a 24p timeline, though it's 24p advanced. So, the way I described above is the best set of steps for getting best quality to mini DV? I used 2-3 pulldown for 24pA...

Wait, I don't get it -- you're using 24pA footage, but you're not in a 24p timeline? Why is that? Or is that a typo and you're ON a 24p timeline?

I'm also not sure how you "used 2-3 pulldown for 24pA" -- by definition, 2-3 pulldown is NOT 24pA. What did you mean by that?

You'll want to use 24pA (2-3-3-2 pulldown) when you export to Mini-DV if that's what's going to the film-out place. It should be no problem when exporting from a 24p timeline.

Hey David,

Yea that was a typo. I'm on a 24 timeline. It's actually not going to film, we are just printing our films to mini dv tape and then showing them in the theatre from the mini dv tapes. So, now I'm confused. Initially, when shooting 24pa I thought I was supposed to insert 2-3-3-2 pulldown when going back to NTSC interlaced tape because of 24pa's pulldown removal process. You said the other day to not use 2-3-3-2 unless you are reediting the footage later and to insert 2-3 pulldown if it's going to a final master to be shown. Am I still correct in assuming that's true? I watched your tutorial, and it was very informative... just making sure... thanks!

Brad

Ah. By "big theater screen," I thought you were meaning film.

Yes, export to tape either as NTSC DV or as 24p DV inserting 2-3 pulldown.

As for uprezzing before you export, there's no reason to do it.
