Best way to transfer files to offsite editor?

I'm looking for a safe and convenient way to send captured footage to an editor who is in another city. This is live concert footage from 2 dvx's, broken into 10 to 20 minute scenes. Altogether about 3 hours of footage--maybe 40 gigs of files. I've considered copying the files onto dvd-r's or an external hard drive. Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks, and happy new year.

If you're just putting raw footage on dvd, that's about 10 of them, depending, of course, on how you break it down. I put all my raw footage on dvd as backup. I then have it on dvd and tapes just to be safe.

What's your method for backing up to dvd? Do you capture with an eye on file size for copying to dvd, or are you talking software backup to dvd?

I'm using Toast 6 Titanium right now. I just start loading clips I want to burn and make sure I don't go over 4.3 GB, then burn them to the disk. Works well for me and then I've got them backed up on disk.

The price of DVD-R has come down enough that this isn't to bad on the pocketbook. I think the last time I bought 100 disks it was about $43. (43 cents each.)

Thanks for the replies. I think I'll go with the external drive.

That is best. Your editor is going to greatly prefer plugging in a drive over loading and organizing a dozen DVDs. The hard drive can be used to send the edited work back to you too.

I may be doing a similar thing and was looking for recommendations on external firewire drives. I have lots of footage (80 hours) to go through and want to load selects onto a drive or two. I just want to cut out the needless footage before sending it to the editor on a portable drive. I would also like to do some backup copies of my master tapes when doing this.

I run XP with a Pentium 4, 2.5GHz and 1GB RAM.

Are there any considerations I should be aware of using a sytem like this with a portable 250GB external hard drive?

I probably will need a firewire card with two ports, for the camera and the drive.

Any thoughts or ideas on the best way to transfer large AVI files would be most appreciated. I'm by no means an editor but I do want to save him some time and me some $$ with this process. I can't imagine trying to do this with tape.

Many thanks in advance.

Jim
