Best way to mic with this setup?

Hello,

I will be shooting a sit down interview by myself and for audio I have a shotgun mic (ME-66) and I'm planning on using a mic stand to support it. The room is 10 x12, and I plan on framing the subject in a close up, so I can get the mic as close to them as possible without being in frame.

With this setup what is the best way to mic, from overhead or slightly off camera axis pointing directly at their mouth?

Thank you

Boom overhead just off frame pointing towards the ground and angle it slightly towards his/her chest. Yes a lav would save you if you are in a noisy location as the shotgun will pick up more ambient noise however it will sound very narrow and not as definite as a shotgun. Personally I would both boom and lav for an interview that way they can pick in post or combine tracks for more definition.

Just one caution about booming ... shotguns such as the ME66 need precise aiming, you don't have much wiggle room. If the mic is locked down on a stand it won't take much head movement on the part of the subject to take him off-mic and degrade the sound quality.

+1 on the lav, with the shotgun you're asking to have it sound echoey since you will be in a bedroom sized box. or at minimum rent a hypercardioid or a cardioid SDC.

good luck

I also agree a hardwired lav is probably the best in this situation. I've done lots of this type of thing in the past. I always would use a hardwired lav and a short shotgun, like a 416 or Sanken CS1. I would most of the time end up using the lav. Make sure to use a good, high quality lav, and if you don't have to hide it, that's even better.
