Best way to manage mixed media and messy TCs?

Hi all,

Looking for some advice on how to best handle starting a new project with hundreds of clips with messy TCs(some not SMPTE) and media ranging from GoPro footage to XDCAM, AVHD, AVis...

Before we even get cutting we'll want to log and transcribe the footage. I was thinking of creating some long ProRes clips organised by date/camera with new TC. Essentially this would create some master reels named for example, 20150501CAM1 etc...

Just wanted some feedback/links as to what other people do in these situations.

Cheers.

First step for me would be ...test that the different formats and codecs actually work in a timeline and are their any framerate or rez issues.

Did you mean transcribe or transcode?

I would workout a post prod management workflow from A-Z. Does timecode figure anywhere in that plan?

G'day shooter.

I did mean transcribe. There are a few interviews and voice grabs across various TCs. So we want to be able to hand it over to a transcriber in a manageable and orderly fashion, while organising our media for the edit.

Haven't come across any frame rate or rez differences yet.

Where do you consider time code will come into your pipeline?

Transcribe Workflow
I think I would create a Sequence or Sequences of the clips that required transcribing... and supply a small h26 export with burnt in time code from the SEQUENCE If the Source clip TC is not useable. THen make subclip selects once that is done.

What NLE are you working with?

Thanks for the quick reply.

Yea TCs will play important part early for transcription and footage logs for producer to paper edit. That's why I thought maybe do away with all the erradic source TC and create new Master reels. Do you reckon there is any reason to retain source TCs and clips?

We have FCP X and Adobe Premiere available to us.

I would work with source footage if it played nicely and work around TC issues by using the timeline generated source code burn ins for paper edits, transcribes etc.
eg I would avoid transcodes.

Seems like you don't need TC for offline / online conforms and I assume that applies to CC and Grade workflow as well.

eg Premiere...and Speedgrade Direct Link.or all Premiere internal CC / Grade only ( of which it is more than capable of getting great results - CC2014+)

Audio Mix and MAster? TC not needed in many workflows.

Ill tell what Ive done for a recent project (7d, gopro, FS7)

Google sheet.

each folder of clips A, C, V (coy paste)

paste those clip names

Google sheet..
Col1 generate an ID
Col2 clip directory
Col3 clip file name
Col4 timcode

Then I plop the footage on a TLine and logged..

Col5 description
Col6 character1 Col7 character 2

Most of my clips are short,
'Chopping Onions' Chef Smith.

When there is a longer clip like an interview I will add rows to the sheet and timecodes to break the clip

eg
ending up like this..
ID63/7d_1/122.mov/n-a/CU of onion chopping/chef smith
ID64/7d_1/123.mov/TC123456/Talks about time under gordon ramsey/chef smith
ID65/7d_1/123.mov/TC123789/Talks about time opening first bar/chef smith
ID66/7d_1/124.mov/n-a/interview cutaways hands et al/chef smith

When in the edit I can sort the columns by id character or whatever.
