Best way to make a Mini-DV Master tape?

Hello,
I am trying to capture my home VHS tapes and edit them to DVD, but I want to keep an archive of them on mini-DV. I've recently purchased a Matrox RT.x10 hardware render and capture card which works really well. I'm using premier 2.0.

So basically my question is, how, or what, is the best way to make a mini-DV
master tape of what I have captured?

Do I create the master tape while simultaneously capturing? (The matrox has S-VHS in's & out's) or do I make it after the whole tape has captured?

Or do I simply hook my vcr to my camera and record from that bypassing the computer entirely? This method might work except for if I needed both mini-DV and an avi on my computer.

All suggestions greatly appreciated,
Thank you!

You said you want to archive what you capture so assumedly you are not capturing everything from the VHS Tapes. Capture and Record out to the DV Device from the Computer via the timeline is the only way you can do that.

If you are archiving the whole VHS Tape - go direct from the VHS Deck to the DV Device.

You should be able to connect the VHS to the DV Device then connect that to the Matrox CArd and do both in one pass ( capture and dubb)

VCR to camera directly will save you a lot of time of capturing and exporting (to tape), but then you want have the luxury of some editing - cutting unwanted parts. As for quality the won't be any loss passing from the computer. Plus if you use the PC you can also give some gain to vhs tapes' audio cause it is always low.

Thanks!
Both of your replies pretty much cleared up all of my questions.
I'll try going VCR -> Camcorder -> Capture card and see how it turns out.
Thanks again!
