best way to get work

What is the best way to get jobs? I've been looking around on different job sites and listings, but that gets to be more work than the job itself. I've done a lot of stuff for myself and other people around my small town, but I've never ventured out into the big world of video production. I've done some nice work for the dirt cheap budgets I have, but I don't know how to use that stuff to get a job with a real company or anything and even if I did get a job, I've never been someone elses production set, so I'm not sure if they'd give me some direction or just say "go". Should I keep hunting on websites or post my work online or what? Just looking for the most effective way. thanks.

Start by researching old threads on this subject, both here and on other boards. Millions of ideas around.

Make a demo reel with what you've got if you can. Build a website if you can and advertise. Is there a media staffing agency where you live? That can be a good source for gigs - maybe not always the gigs you want but money is money and the contacts you make will help down the road.

Do you want to be self employed or work for a more established production company?

No, I don't think there are any media staffing agencies around. I'm on the east coast directly between New York and Florida, so all the good media places are in opposite directions.

I would kind of like to work for a production company because if I was self-employed I'd be running into the same problem; getting jobs. I know once you've established yourself and networked a little jobs will come to you, but I'm just getting my feet wet and haven't done a whole lot of that yet.

Since I'm willing to travel almost anywhere, I was just wondering an effective way to find a job anywhere, to at least get a start.

I haven't heard anyone talking about
www.guru.com

I signed up for audio work, and I get at least one email a week for some odd job needing to be done.
As a disclaimer, I have to say I haven't accepted any of the offers yet becuase I'm already too busy.

Your mileage may vary.

Movies are my real passion, but I don't have the time to help people for free or the real experience to get a good paid position. Would commercials be a good way to go? There are a couple ad agencies where I live. Should I call them up or send a demo reel or something? what are the steps I should take if I go that route? thanks for your ideas.

Jeff, does guru actually have reasonable projects. WHen I was signed up for them for web programming, all I saw were jobs that paid nothing or maybe $5 an hour.
