Best video format to film in for online video

Just wondering what format is best to capture video in to display high quality video over the internet. 720p or 1080i?

Can your camera shoot 24p over 60i? If so, just remove the pull down and it is progressive. You can also convert it with software - Natress makes a nice 24p converter.

Whatever format you can afford. Either will look great if shot with skilled hands. As played on Vimeo in HD, it's hard to see the difference between 1080 & 720p

Just shoot HD for vimeo. HD formate will be great for the net. Especially, vimeo offering FREE HD services (Limited to 500mb) but still, with a compression of H.264, you'll be find for the web. You should know someone with a HD or HDV camera. Good Luck.

For online viewing, 1080i will be fine because in the end you are not going to want to have a huge file for people to download to watch. Most of the time people will downsize the 720p or 1080i to 480p or even smaller. H.264 is a very good compression for making small, high quality online videos.

Shoot 24p if you can. If you can't then shoot 60i/29.97 and use a NLE or a program like DVFilm Maker or Natress to convert to 24p. The latter two will do a better job than most NLE's. Also, you can use your NLE's just to deinterlace and give you 30p which can be a decent compromise.

Best,
Andy

Once you de-interlace any footage, you start to loose quality. Shooting Progressive keeps quality high, and prevents the need for extra post-processing.

Of course , if you already have your hardware, you'll just have to weigh the cost of anew camera vs the amount of time you'll spend converting interlaced footage over.

that's a great camera, and you can definitely produce 720p from it, but i don't know how, because i'm not into hdv.

since you are shooting for the internet, you really don't have to worry about exporting in 720p mode, afaik... just shoot, capture, and edit in hdv, then export the finished edited file in the 'net format of your choice.

wrt to progressive vs. interlaced, the real question is, will that sony hdv camera capture in true progressive mode? hopefully 30p, and not 24p?

Well I find that 500 x 340 is a nice size for the videos on my webpages. I'm not sure if this is a good ratio, but works for me. I find that when I shoot in HDV the files are large, then after compressing it via either H264 or On2 .flv it just comes down to normal quality. I guess I want to find the best quality for the lowest size
