Best video format for working in Premiere Pro 2.0 with HD footage

There is probably a very obvious answer to this question, as I can't seem to find anything on google about it.

I generally use AVI when working between Premiere and After Effects, but only when using DV-PAL resolution (720x576)... but when I'm using HD, I can't seem to figure out the best format to use.

Usually I would use MPEG-2 but After Effects hates it and Premiere seems to need to uncompress it.

Am I missing something? Is there a better/more efficient format I can use when editing and exporting HD footage?

Many thanks!

If I'm exporting clips out of AE, I like to use the quicktime animation codec. Smaller file size than uncompressed, but still pretty big. I wouldn't use it for a long project, but it's nice for effects work. And yes I do hear that Cineform is all the rage.

Thanks a lot guys, I might look into getting Cineform - but this might have to be a future solution rather than immediate.

Does Premiere take a while to decode/decompress quicktime with animation as the codec?

This is my main concern - I'm looking for something with decent quality (in HD) and fast import/export in/out of premiere.

Cheers
