Best video format for editing in Premiere?

I'm currently shooting a feature length doc half in AVCHD and half in h264. I have heard people say these are not great for editing, but I'm not sure what I should be converting those files to for the easiest/best editing in Premiere, and also what software I should be using to convert?

I'm also wondering about space. The upside of AVCHD is that it takes up remarkably little space for what it is (full 1080p video). If I should convert all my footage to another format, what should I expect in terms of file sizes? Would I lose any image quality by converting?
