Best video capture card with 24p support?

I am in the process of deciding what video capture card to purchase for my PC-based system for use with my DVX100A.

What I would like to know is I ultimately want to use 24p for most of my work. Is it important to buy a card that will support 3:2 pulldown removal such as the declink extreme or sp to get the best final output or will simply shooting in 24p and editing in a 30i timeline suffice? If so would the DV storm be a good solution?

I will welcome all feedback, suggestions or recommendations.

Thanks!

i used to spend a lot of money on fancy capture cards from canopus and then matrox but now i just use the firewire port built into my computers motherboard.

i would spend the extra money on either a faster computer or a computer with more storage.

premiere does so much in realtime or near realtime now that a 3rd party capture card really isn't neccesary.

give us the specs of your computer, speed, storage etc...

Brands matter not. I got a cheapy IEEE 1394 from Ebay. They are pretty standarized now, so no more worries with that.

I believe when the DV is pulled into the computer it is all seen as 29.97 NTSC or 25 PAL. Its the software on the computer that removes the pulldown and turns it into true 24P.

Re: Best video capture card with 24p support?

I have a fairly fast system. A Dell Precision 530 workstation with dual 2.2 xeon processors, 2 gigs of ram and an ati 8500dv video card.

Although I can capture without any difficulty with my IEEE 1394, I would like to have the immediacy of realtime playback with most correction, processing and effects. Even though my system is fairly fast, there is still quite a bit of processing when any subtantial filtering or effects are applied.

Also, I know that the DV storm 2 is a great card, but would I get any benefit whatsoever from using a declink that supports removal of the pulldown?

When you set up a project in Vegas 5 or Premier Pro and select 24p as the project mode, what are you actually doing to the captured video? Are you removing the pulldown frames or does it still leave the pulldown and edit on a 30i timeline?

Would using a card that removes the pulldown only benefit in 24p advanced if you were ultimately going to film?

Thanks for your help....sorry for the lack of understanding on my end. I'm just trying to get up to speed on what actually occurs in the editing process using different cards.

A video capture card isn't going to help you preview editing effects. The NLE removes the 2:3 or 2:3:3:2 pulldown when it imports the file so you can edit on a 24P timeline. Of course, you can also leave the pulldown in if you want and edit on a 29.97 timeline. A video or capture card will not give you any advantage in transferring DV footage.

For real time previews of effects, your raw processor power is the primary factor. Unless you have a specific application like After Effects that can take advantage of OpenGL processing and previewing, adding a fancy video card won't accomplish anything. An OpenGL card like some of the Nvidias or a Matrox Parhelia will allow for previewing effects in certain applications. Definitely, not in Vegas, although I'm not familiar with the latest version of Premiere.
