Hey there Secret Hand,

I looked into this myself, and went off of the catalog B+W offers from their website. Based on the listed focal length of the HVX, the normal one seems like it would work fine:

HVX Focal Length- (35 mm Still Film Equivalence) 32.5 to 423 mm (gotten from B&H)

B+W Handbook reads: "The B+W standard filter mount F-Pro can be used without vignetting on 35mm cameras with focal lengths of 35mm, most 28mm lenses, and in many cases even on 24mm lenses."

So it seems like it should work fine. Oh yea, and make sure you get the MRC coating to reduce/eliminate potential glare. :) Have a good one.

is there even a slim out yet? i am looking for something to put between the matte box in front of the lens, but haven't found a slim 82mm UV... anybody have a source on one?

I just got me a heliopan 82mm UV yesterday.
its a slim version , black anodized brass rim, multicoated Schott glass (that Zeiss to you and me).
Top stuff.

B+W makes slims as well (and seems to be a recommended choice as I learned from a previous post here myself). Unfortunately you can't put the lens cap on with the slim versions, however.

A conventional lens cap wouldn't be attachable, but on the HVX that's a non-issue because the lens cap attaches to the lens hood, not the filter threads.

Does the standard Schnieder/B+W UV filter have that special MRC coating on it? or is it a special dedicated filter?

I have the Schnieder/B+W F-PRO 82mm UV filter and i dont remember seeing anything about MRC.

YES. Take my word for it.

We dont buy UV filters to block UV rays (silly), we buy them to shield the front element of our prescious, and most expensive, Lieca lens.

Ive learnt it the hard way, not having a clear or UV filter on my DVX resulted in 600$ worth of repairs. Needless to say i learnt my lesson, and now cant even look at my camera unless its sporting some protection ;)

Even if you have a mattebox i recommend the use of a screw in UV/clear filter. Its not worth the risk.

Do you really need UV filter for HVX?

I am sorry I am asking these kind of questions. But I have to :)
Not really, no. Digital cameras (still and video) don't really need UV filtering in the same way that a film camera does. But most people use one as the main purpose is to act as a protective filter to your HVX lens. Instead of a UV filter some people will use a clear filter, sometimes called an "Optical Clear" filter.

[edit] - so, I guess I should concur with Rhydon, and say "yes", get one. The first 3 extras I bought for my HVX were a UV filter, a pelican case and some prefessional insurance.

is it the case that in order to use both the UV screw on filter and a matte box, like the chrosziel, you would have to buy the slim version?

No. I have the chrozsiel HVX setup and it dose not require you to purchase the slim UV, the regular works fine. What people dont realize is that with the chrozsiel system with rod support, the adapter ring goes over the lens bayonet mount, just kind of hovers there, has no impact on the threads of the lens.

Not sure about the non-support version, it may be different, but i think it still mounts in a similar manor.

thanks rhydon.
i should have my chrosziel matte box in the next day or so... glad to know i can move forward with the UV filter and get that ball rolling.
