best unknown movie scores

I'm actually looking for scores with subtelty, that might work in a coming-of-age movie. But please list any great movie score that not many people know about (The Sweet Hereafter comes to mind).

Does part of a score count? If so, the Tuvan Throat Singers in the ice cave section of the second Tomb Raider was really good.

Solaris-The music really made the movie.

Vangelis work in Blade Runner?

Some good stuff has been listed. Blade Runner has one of the best scores of any film ever in my opinion. A couple more:

David Lynch's Dune had a great score (Toto, who would have thought?)

Star Trek The Motion Picture (Pieces of it are well known, but the score as a whole is often looked over and it's fantastic)

Very strange! I love all the Lynch scores by Badalamenti, but would never have considered the score from Dune... I found it a little grating...

I really like the quirky score from Punch-Drunk Love. And I think American Beauty needs mentioning, because its style has been popping up everywhere...

Yeah, I can see your point. Maybe I like it so much because it's such a "What?" moment. I mean Toto? Africa? Roseanna? But somehow Lynch got the idea, and it mostly worked, so I consider it a great lesser-known film score.

c.g._eads, to go back to something from your original post, for coming-of-age stories, check out the scores to Cameron Crowe's films. I think the only movies he makes are coming-of-age films.

Well, you know, with Lynch movies (especially Dune!), you can look at it and say, man, that really doesn't work... then, you think to yourself, hey, this is a David Lynch flick, and then it does work, but twists your mind around to a completely different take on the whole experience. So, yes, I agree, and especially in that sense, Toto! I mean, I remember the score well, which is already something. Specifically, I remember Paul on top of a worm, and those big guitar chords, and I really expect him to start air-guitaring or pumping his fist. Which is, as I'm trying ineptly to explain, both incongruous and perfectly suited at the same time. Blah blah ignore me!

Oh, this is easy...

Plunkett & Macleane hands down. Never even seen the movie, only read about it on iMDb, but score is amazing.

Good one David -- I've never seen the movie or heard the actual soundtrack, but the Young Sherlock Holmes love theme is in a piano sheet music book that I've had for years and it's great.

I really liked Memento's score, the non-black and white scenes where the main character starts to learn the truth, etc. sounds kinda depressing, but it works well with the movie.

Oh, and Leon: The Professional and I reaaally terrific score!!! I love Eric Serra's work, he breathed musical life back into the James Bond series with his score for Goldeneye.
