Best stereo mic under $500 CDN

Looking for a relatively high definition, stereo mic that can be mounted on the 100A. I'm very interested in the AT-835ST, but the price is rather steep for my current budget. Would buy used though, if anyone's selling. :)

Any tips?

I wouldn't mount a stereo mic on the camera. If you want to mount a mic on the camera, then I would use a mono short shotgun mic.

Why is that? For a professional shoot, I wqould use mono microphones on booms, but for documentary on-the-fly material, it seems that stereo offers the best possibilities for spontaneous captures. A mono shotgun would actually be limiting in this case. No?

A stereo mic is going to get too much stuff. Believe me, I've cleaned up a lot of sound on docs that people used stereo mics because they thought it would sound more natural. It ends up creating more headaches then helping anything. Use a mono shotgun. You'll be happy.

I can attest to that. I've been doing the same exact thing the original poster is thinking of doing. While I was able to catch good audio, most of the shots you take don't necessarily go with the audio. Meaning, the focus of what you tend to shoot will not be the same focus of the audio. I've found from the little time I've had with a relatively good shotgun (ME66) that the sound was more right on and easier to deal with in post while it still caught enough sound around itself for me to use. Zeroing in on what the audio you want will be harder to deal with later if you use a stereo mic. I was thinking of going the ST835 way too but I think that would be best to reinforce the shotgun audio but not to be used as the sole microphone. IMO
