I have the Varizoom VZB20 bag and it works quite well,
seems quite rugged and has the advantage of being
quite inconspicous (other than the Porta Brace bags
that somewhat scream "steal me!")
Bought the bag at EVS for 80$ this year when I was on a business trip to SoCal.

Is the Varizoom small enough that it would be allowed as a carry-on when on the plane?
i bought the porta brace dv3. $175 @ b&h, which makes it one of the more expensive bags, but it is very, very nice. i'm almost as happy with it as i am with the camera. far superior construction than the others, especially in the very important strap-attaching-to-the-bag area (go to a store and compare). it's fairly compact as well, so imagine it would fit carry-on (dv4 is the much larger bag that can accomodate an attached matte box).
porta-brace does scream 'steal me', but so does the camera, which spends most of it's time outside the bag when i'm not storing it at home.
as I said, I bought the Varizoom bag at EVS together with some other gear and used the bag to carry everything.
On two flights (one domestic from San Diego to Dallas, the other international to Frankfurt) there was no problem with having the Varizoom bag as carry-on.
I got the Portabrace BK3 which is pretty freakin expensive. You're probably going to need the space eventually anyway, so might as well get something big and durable.
