Best small recorder to pair with the Rode Stereo VideoMic X

Need some help finding the best pairing for my Rode Stereo VideoMic X.

I currently have the Roland R26 and Tascam DR70D but they are too big/heavy to mount on the Zacuto Indie Recoil.
Instead I am looking for a small (less than 200g) field recorder that will get the absolute best out of the Rode Stereo VideoMic X.
I have seen recommendations for the Zoom H1 and the Tascam DR22WL.
I am also considering the Zoom H5 with the X/Y microphone removed.
I have also considered just going with a pre-amp like the Fostex AR501.
I am happy to spend up to US$500, and only really need the one XLR input.
What would people suggest?

You don't say what you would like in the recorder except size and weight. Best? Can't say. I'll suggest to you a very small recorder like the Sony Pcm M10 of which I have used and liked. No xlr but i believe the Rode is a 3.5mm too.

If this is for run and gun, I'd think twice about having a separate recorder to start up. I used a H1 and had a line out to the camera. At one point, when I pressed the record button to start recording, I had by accident reversed it and stopped the recording. After this experience, I used the Fostex AR501 straight to the camera. Worked well, until I ran into loud sounds which clipped. What made it worse was that meters on the camera were not showing clipping. Now I have a work around by changing line to mic signal on the camera, but it's not perfect. Now I wish I had a preamp with a good limiter, but nothing beats having a sound person and having everything else for backup.
