Best Small Mood Lights

Hello,

I have no idea if mood lights are what they call them, but I am looking for lights that you can throw in the background to light up a furniture piece to add depth. I definatly wont be able to afford Arri's. I want lights with barndoors to help control the lights. Any recommendations would be great, the cheaper the better.

Thanks

Sounds like you might be talking about a fresnel. Here is a relatively inexpensive one that has a snoot but no barn doors. Try searching for home accent lights with fresnel lenses; maybe you'll find something for less.

I don't think that is what I am looking for. I think it is something like the Arri 150. I know that is a fresnel, but it is a small light with barndoors that can put light on something in the background.

The Altman Terry pointed out is a poor man's version of an Arri 150 or a Mole Inkie. You can buy barn doors for it. They are very good for the price.

What about this light?
The Lowel Pro is also a good, small economical light for use as a special like you describe. You'll need another $35 for barndoors. I have a dozen of these fixtures and they're very versatile. They're not fresnels, though, so while they throw a pretty clean beam and are somewhat focusable it is not as smooth and controllable as a fresnel. I wouldn't be without them and have converted a number of DPs after they see them in operation.

To pinpoint an object, such as hands on a piano keyboard, you can use blackwrap on the barndoors to make a nice snoot.

Dedolights are great for this. Also remember that you can purchase a larger fresnel than the 150w you mentioned, which will cover more ground than the 150w when needed. Simply use barn doors and a Harbor Freight router controller to dim it down to the desired output level.

All the Best!

Dave

Thanks for the responses, I think I'm going to go with the lowel.

NOOB question: What does OP mean? I know that is me, but what does it mean.
