Whatever you get, make sure to take the time to setup correctly and do some proper testing.

I bought the DVRig Pro and was ready to send it back, mostly because I didn't take the time to setup everything properly.

That would have been a GREAT BIG MISTAKE.

Re: best shoulder mount?.

Rodger what did you do wrong?

I think the DVrigpro is leaps and bounds better than any other shoulder mount out there... which reminds me I gotta get on that review.

Probably everything ;D

Before I go to far past that, let me say I FULLY AGREE with your feelings on this shoulder mount.

Actually, its a bit of a story, so rather then re-elaborate it here, when you feel like reading for 5 minutes or so look down to my thread "Shoulder Mount or What?" in this forum.

Re: best shoulder mount?.

is it easy to use the focus ring withh this mount?

how about the eyepiece with this mount?...or is it better suited for the flip out monitor?

also...what's the going price tag?

thanks in advance for the info :)

Re: best shoulder mount?.

Anybody on here actually using this? It looks similiar to the Anton Bauer shoulder mount with that battery in the back of your shoulder. I would reccommend trying to check it out in person at a video equipment store or DV show to see if you like it before committing to buying. I am not to crazy about the 2 handles. I think one with a zoom controller on it would be fine.

When setup properly, the DVRig Pro will balance so there is no problem removing your left hand to focus. I actually kind of lightly rest my forearm on foam padding on the left grip and sort of cradle my fingers around the top of the hood and use my index finger and thumb on the focus ring. It is actually easier this way then without the DVRig Pro.

I really like to keep my eye pushed right into the eye-cup. It seems to connect me and the DVRig somehow. Since I have to shoot with both eyes open (left eye looking through a targeting device), it make for a very solid and extremely fast method to get on target and keep it there -- All with almost no vibration or jitter.

Price is very expensive for what it could be built for... But what isn't in pro camera gear :'(. Unless you can find someone building a knock-off, I really doubt anything is buy-able right now that is as good. Call Rush at evsonline.com and get pricing -- Very good people there.

http://store.yahoo.com/cinemasupplies/cashsu.html

what do you think?

basically i'm looking for the equivalent mount that would most be like an ENG cam....maybe i should go buy the XL1....

anybody compare the image 2000 to the dvrig mount in person?

I and Jarred are. Mine is for keeps, don't know about Jarred's. I personally have not put any other shoulder mount rig on my shoulder, as I've only had the DVX100A for a couple of weeks now. So, I would not like to say any absolutes about Anton Bauer or anyone else's rig. I will say (and already have) I really doubt anyone is building anything for shoulder mount as good, let alone better. I only base that on my experience with the DVRig Pro obviously, but unless there is something out that is incorporating some kind of SteadiCam technologies into a shoulder mount I just don't believe it could be better.

The 2 hand-grips are important as most of us have 2 hands ;D. I mean, what are you going to do with the other hand? Unless you are always on the focus ring (an you may very well shoot that way), you still got a hand that needs to go somewhere. The other factor is if you do any sort of movement at all, its really nice to have both hands lightly holding, rather then 1 hand gripping, its just smoother and feels right.

I do have the zoe zoom on the right grip. It is absolute (no problem with the absolute here) the way to go on this rig. I have to zoom all the time I'm shooting, and this would not be possible in any other way in my application. Zoe is also the best remote zoom in most peoples opinion -- Mine included.

I would also recommend if you could try this rig (and others) before buying, do so. But honestly, all I think this will do is make you even more satisfied when you buy the DVRig Pro ;D

Re: best shoulder mount?.

thanks dor the feedback

i haven't seen the anton bauer mount...anybody have a link?

i usually shoot with one hand on the focus ring and the other on the zoom controller which is why i was thinking that one handle is enough

...but i can see the adnatages to having both

Re: best shoulder mount?.

Sidebar - I have not found any method to manual focus on the left hand grip. As stated above, focus with the focus ring is as good/better then without the DVRig Pro, but for me it is still not fast enough. I really need something mechanical mounted to the left hand grip that I can just twist like a motorcycle throttle or maybe like the Zoe controller if electric.

Since nothing is showing up, I guess my son and I will look into making it. We're so busy with what we manufacture now, I'm really not looking forward to this, but unless something else shows up, I will need this with a couple of months.

If anyone finds something like this, please PM me so I don't miss it.

I'd appreciate it.

Thanks.

Re: best shoulder mount?.

Steve,

That shoulder mount on that Film Tools site for that XL-1 looks good but I don't know about paying the sale price of $395 for it even though it is way cheaper than the DVRig Pro ($599.00 at EVS) There is a company in Florida, www.studio1.com that has a shoulder support too. Look at how similiar that one is to the one with the XL-1 mount on the www.filmtools.com site. The Studio1 support is about $150 but they look almost similiar except it only comes with 1 hand grip though. They also have a zoom controller made for the DVX for $149 as well.

I am not saying the company in Florida's products are good or bad...just letting you know to check things out before you make the purchase.

Re: best shoulder mount?.

the mount on filmtools.com
http://store.yahoo.com/cinemasupplies/cashsu.html

has three models listed

the first is the exact same one as you mention on the studio one site....click on it...even has the same darn picture...they are both selling it for $150

the mount that i like is the last one of the three..(the image 2000 handycam.it has one hand grip that is slightly offset it sells for$295

the dual handgrip one (image 2000 xl1) sells for $395

abel cine tech sells the dv pro rig ...with their dvx100's...they are very reputable....perhaps i will try one out before i buy the one hand model from filmtools

Re: best shoulder mount?.

Hey Steve,

I've seen the previous mentioned mounts, but don't recall the Image 2000. Post a link and we can look.

As I am becoming more and more familiar with the DVRig Pro the more I use it, I can see a big part to it's *closeness* to the operator has to do with the center support and exact balancing of the whole rig.

I'm pretty sure some kind of center support will need to be used to even come close in comparing to the DVRig Pro. That said, it would not be impossible to incorporated this is someone else's mount, it would take a bit of fabrication though I suppose.

Re: best shoulder mount?.

So Marj,

you give the DVrig 2 thumbs up? I need to try to check it out in person before I shell out the $$$ for it.

Re: best shoulder mount?.

OK, I did see those, just didn't remember there were 3 different ones. I'm sure they would be fine for just a shoulder mount, as would most. It is just that the DVRig Pro has taken the shoulder mount concept about as far a I can see it going without incorporating steadicam technologies -- Which at first I thought it had.

I wouldn't go so far as 2 thumbs up, as there is some room for quality improvement. Primarily, the spring loaded center support should have a teflon lined tube and teflon bushing to eliminate any squeaks or binding. It is not so much as to make it unusable, but it can be a problem when compressing when fully extended. Also, the tubes are too short for long bodied people (me and my son). The support belt is too skimpy and cheap. The pocket on the belt the center support fits into is to shallow.

Still, after all of these imperfections, I believe it is the best available right now. So, maybe 1-1/2 thumbs up is closer ;D
