Hey guys,
I'm looking to pick up a shotgun mic for around $500-$600 that is going to give me the best sound quality possible - for the money. Any Suggestions?

I'm using it with a Canon XH-A1 HDV camera, but intended to record to DAT or CF on future projects. Long story short, I know compressed HDV audio isn't the best... but I'm specifically asking about the best mic for my camera currently and for the future.

audio technica 4073 is about what you have in that range and it is very good mic for the money

Dave:

I wrote this exactly for people in your position. Spend an hour and decide which mic works best for you with your ears. Taking recommendations without hearing the mic is pointless. What sounds good to me may not sound good to you and vice versa. http://www.kenstone.net/fcp_homepage/right_mic_brockett.html

Read Dan's incredible article, learn a lot! Of course, whatever mic you get you'll need to know how to get good sound, so I'll plug the beyond fantastic DVD you can get here, Sound for Film and Television: http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=133986

NOW - the AT4073a imo and many others is heh I love it, for that price, can't beat. But factor in accessories (windscreens, shockmounts, cables, poles, etc.) but for 5-600 it's the best mic certainly. But I'm biased =)
