Best Shooting Format for DVD

Being new to HD I have a newbie question.

I've been asked by a director to film a dress rehearsal of a play. I am to present the video on a standard DVD to play on his computer or possibly TV.

What is the best format in which to shoot? SD? Or, is it better to shoot in HD (720 vs 1080?) so that I have a higher resolution version just in case it is needed at some pint in the future and then convert the HD to SD to burn to a DVD? (I have Sony Vegas Pr v11 and soon Premier 5.5 available to me.)

Thanks,

Dan

Since I made the switch, I shoot everything in HD even though most of my work is still delivered in SD.
The biggest advantage I've found is that I can zoom and /or pan in post if I need to.
Also, if I ever do make the switch to Blu-ray, I'm ready for it.

Thanks, Mike. But do you experience any degradation in quality when making the switch from HD to SD?

I've seen some discussions on the web in which people expressed dissatisfaction with the SD quality that results from HD footage. It may be that these were old discussions and that Vegas and other NLEs have caught up with the times, and that they now produce nice clean and sharp SD footage.

Thanks,

Dan

Dan, the HD I shoot is 4.5 times the size of SD so I expect to see some degradation (and I do) but I'm not going to loose any sleep over it.
I usually apply a light Sharpen FX to the entire video track to compensate for the loss of detail that results when downsizing.
I started off my video career over 30 years ago with 1/2" reel-to-reel back and white VTRs (Sony AV-3600) and vidicon tube cameras.
The video industry has come a very long way since those days :)
